  • Open Mouth: Shedding or Breathing?!

My baby surinam did not shed properly last time. This time, when I noticed her eyes had turned blue and that she was ready to shed, I turned our humidifier on for her all night. This morning it was plenty hot and humid where I keep her enclosure. Late this afternoon, I noticed that she poked her head out from under the aspen and started contorting her mouth widely. There are no bubbles. The cage is warm and clean. But for about 8 minutes, she kept stretching her mouth wide open. Is she stretching to losen the skin or does she have a respiratory problem?!

sounds to me that your snake is jsut loosening the skin around their head, from the info you gave.

Thanks Ryan. Clay emailed me to say it was a sign of shedding. I guess the humidifier did the trick. She looks healthy. I panic about everything just like a new mother!

Well, Clay was right. She shed beautifully! She was just stretching her skin and getting ready to shed.
