  • [Skin] Shed question

My boa was in blue a few days ago but still hasen't shed. He's been opening his mouth alot. Is this normal? I'm thinking maybe his skin that has yet to be shed might be annoying him around his mouth but I'd like other opinions. Thanks

Define a lot? They do open their mouth prior to shedding, it does help losen the skin so they can get it off.

It's not constant, just more than usual

All normal. Be patient and he'll shed.

Also make sure your humidity is good. Spritzing him occasionally will assist.

He shed last night. There's still some skin on his chin/jaw. I tried to pull it off for him but he didn't like that. I regularly mist him.

As long as his eye caps and tail tip are clean, and there's no complete ring of shed on his body, just leave him be and keep his humidity up. He can remove the stuck shed under his jaw on his own.

Put him in some water to soften the skin up. Then take it off, they way t doesn't hurt your snake and the skin is easier to come out with no problems. In the future fix your humidity so your snake can have one complete shed.

As above , a good long soak the get a wet , rough textured towel and feed the snake through the towel repeatedly until all the shed skin is off .

the patch of skin on his chin is still on there. I've bee waiting for it to fall on it's own. I thought that the stretching from his last meal on sunday would do the trick. Nope. I'm worried this could cause mouth rot. It in no way looks like that now, just slightly yellowed dry old skin that lifted in a few areas.

Stuck shed on his chin will not cause mouth rot so don't worry about that. Like others have suggested, a warm soak will help or what I do is wet a towel with hot water, wring it out really good and put the snake in the towel, it's kind of like a steam bath for reptiles and it usually will soften the shed up and it will come off in the towel.

As above basically although I use 'snake temp' water , soak in a secure container with half an inch of air at the top . Then get a very damp , rough textured towel and let the snake crawl / slide repeatedly through the towel , applying gentle pressure .
Just keep feeding the towel over the snake's head as it comes out . This has proved to be 100% effective if the method is followed carefully .
