  • [Respiratory] Slight wheeze when excited...

    Hi all,

The little male Suriname I just got on Saturday (from airport) seems to have a slight wheeze when excited. When I open his enclosure to check up on him he wheezes some and when I close his enclosure and he calms down it goes away. He was real active Saturday and most of the day Sunday. I fed him a f/t hopper mouse on Sunday since he hadn't eaten in 8 days or so. (Shipper wanted to ship him on an empty stomach). Normally I'd wait 4 or 5 days. He was pretty active after his meal also.

He has been in his enclosure all day today (Monday) all coiled up. Its about 84-85 inside his hide. about 83 on top his hide and about 78-80 on the cool end.

He had no wheezing at all Saturday or Sunday and his shipping box was nice and warm when I first opened it. Any thing I should watch for / do?

    Thanks much,

I would increase his temps a bit and just keep an eye out for snotty nose etc, remember to sanatize in between handling your others as they can catch it, and if it persists a trip to the vets for some antibiotics I’m afraid, fingers crossed for you

Thanks for the reply. The breeder recommended boiling 1tsp of vicks+eucalyptus in 1 cup of water and placing that in his enclosure. (In a glass jar with a lid w/ holes). I jacked the temps up to around 92-93 on the warm end.

I hope it clears up before the need for antibiotics. I have no faith in the vets in the area as far as reptiles go. I've gave my old boa shots years ago for a resp infection. It wasn't hard at all but then again he was 5-6' long with lots of tissue to inject into. I'd be real afraid trying to give a shot to this 20" guy.

I’ve heard people say that too ,but I would be wary, with being small, most of the time there body own defence will kick in once the temps have been upped, i have never had to give injections ,but when my 6ft albino caught a r/I I had to give him antibiotics everyday for 10 days orally and he wasn’t impressed as you can imagine,he never once bit tho,i was expecting it,lol

I can live with doing oral meds. I'm sure he won't like it tho. With the temps jacked up I'm going to give it a day or 2 and see if there is improvement. I did find a vet about 45 mins away that might be OK. I'll be going to him if no improvement soon.

Yes leave it s few days as you say.sometimes a bit of stuck shed in the nostrils can cause a similar noise too

He didn't have this noise the first 2 days I had him and he hasn't shed yet. I first noticed it last night. He doesn't do it non-stop. Just when he's a little agitated from being disturbed. After he calms down it stops. I'm 95% sure its wheezing though and not hissing. Seems to be coming from the nostrils.

He was very active the first 2 days and hasn't come out of his hide the last 2. I gave him a 6g f/t hopper Sunday evening, so that might be why he's staying put. His hide is the warmest area of the enclosure. About 92F.

I need better temp control so I ordered a Herpstat 2. This should be come in real handy.

I'm starting to think it wasn't wheezing and was just how this little guy hisses. If he's not hissing/real excited I don't hear anything. All seems good right now.

I was going to ask how he was doing, that sounds like a bit of good news then , it would be all the time if it was an R.i so fingers crossed it’s just how he is
