I hate the HSUS. They make me so angry I can't use exclamation marks.

      Re: HSUS video

Here's a great comment that was made under the video on the YouTube website:

Good video - definitely a step in the right direction, but it fails to mention that the HSUS has tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) of the US Treasury Code, when the code states that a 501 (c)(3) "may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates." More investigation is needed to expose these extremists for who they really are.

        Re: HSUS video

did a little bit of research and this is what i found...

they are in fact a tax-exempt organization under sect. 501(c)(3)
26 U.S.C. § 501 : US Code - Section 501: Exemption from tax on corporations, certain trusts, etc.

and they CAN make political contributions (for candidates, lobbying, etc), but those amounts cannot exceed
"150 percent of the lobbying nontaxable amount
for such organization for such taxable year, determined under
        section 4911"

        which can be found here:

TaxAlmanac - Internal Revenue Code:Sec. 4911. Tax on excess expenditures to influence legislation

that's where i get lost... anyone familiar with taxes/finances?

*edit* based on a table from sect. 4911 it would appear that they cannot make lobbying contributions that would exceed "250,000 plus 5 percent of the excess of the exempt purpose expenditures over 1,500,000"

according to that news report, their lobbying contributions are approaching (or exceeding) 100 million/year! seems like that is a BIT over the limit...

(exempt purpose expenditures seems to mean the money they spend each year on things that are related to the purpose of the organization? this is where i'm a little confused... help?)

thanks! now we just need someone more familiar with taxes and finances to take a look at it and HSUS's finances to see if they are within their limits. i doubt they are.

              Re: HSUS video

I'm sure HSUS has some very creative accountants on staff to make sure they don't exceed that. However I'm also sure that in reality, they easily exceed their limit every year. It's a shame that people think donating money to HSUS is actually helping animals in shelters when it's actually going to politicians and eco terrorists.

Maybe HSUS puts some of their donations to buy politicians through their affiliate companies.

The "humane" web looks a lot like organized crime to me. This is rediculous. How can we legitimately fight these people.
