ALERT: S373 Python Ban Goes to Hearing

S373 aka ‘The Python Ban’ will receive a Hearing before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee Chaired by Barbara Boxer (D-CA) on December 3, 2009. The bill sponsor is Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL). If passed as written it would Ban all snakes in the family Pythonidae, placing them on the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act. That is ALL 40 species of pythons! This action would stop all import, export and interstate transport. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) took definitive steps yesterday toward lobbying Senator Nelson to add Boa Constrictor to the bill as well. HSUS has publicly called for an end of reptile ownership nationwide for years.

As we understand it right now there will be eight bills heard by the committee with only one witness to testify on all eight. USARK does not anticipate that there will be additional witnesses called. This seems to be an effort to move through as many bills as possible in as short a time as possible. We will know more soon.

USARK is opposed to legislating any animals on to the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act. This should be a science and policy driven debate. As it stands now the science is being “cherry picked” to support political expediency. Just yesterday an independent group of scientists called the USGS study being used by HSUS and others to justify a ban, “unscientific”.

As always USARK is providing the best, most timely information available on this issue to the Reptile Nation. Re: S373 python Ban Hearing Set!!!!!

I now it's the holiday weekend , and all, but we need to beat this. Write, fax, call, email as many reps as you can... visit your local reps at their homes on Thanksgiving... what ever you have to.

We have little time and a lot to do. If we don't beat this we are looking at the end of everything that we have. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if we don't beat this then in 10 years time there won't be a species of reptile or amphibian that is legal to own.

Sure, we might be able to keep our boas and pythons if this passes, but in a year's time I wouldn't be surprised if further amendments were made to collect and destroy all currently owned species. After that... it's one species at a time until the entire reptile and amphibian side of the pet trade is wiped out. If this passes: 10 years time people... 10 years time.

I know a lot of you have been sitting back on your laurels and figuring that USARK and PIJAC will take care of this, that somehow this doesn't involve you. ...But guess what - this is very real... as real as it gets, and t does involve you. If you continue to sit back and do nothing you will have nothing. No rights, no boas, no pythons, and no hobby. And if this passes and you dind't fight then I don't want to hear any whining about how you can't buy a python or boa.

Stand up for your right or lose them. And personally, I'm not one to go out without a fight! So put down the turkey and get on that fax machine, send out emails to as many reps as you can, call their offices. Flood them for Monday morning. Because if we loose this none of us will have much to be thankful for.

There is no reason why this should be slipping out of the active thread list!

This is so hugely important to our hobby. Get on the ball people! Stand up for your rights or they will be taken away!

Call, fax, email, and write your local reps about this. ...And as many others as you can.

Jeff and/or Clay: is there anyway we can light a fire under the collective rump of the community to stir up some action? I realize this is a holiday weekend, but if we can have the various politicians come into work on Monday and be faced with a sea of media from the reptile keepers community in opposition to S373 then I think we will be off to a better start than waiting until Monday morning to deal with this. ...Which I'm afraid is what some folks are considering.

Holiday or not, if we don't beat this we stand to loose our entire hobby.

                FIGHT!

All the best of luck with this guys,I know there is no bans I know of proposed in the UK or Ireland but we all know if these bills are passed in the U.S it will spread like a plague to Europe. You's have to fight this and hard.

I've never even heard of this bill before. How can they just decide what pets you can and cannot own? Is this because of all dumping of berms and retics in the Everglades?

I can't even comprehend the reason behind this law since its for all types. I don't really like pet restrictions of any kind but I do understand the cases such as tigers and lions and stuff that people want to keep but snakes? That's ridiculious!
