Ok so I go to petco to pick something up and i see they have a couple hides on sale...they Usually go for 15.00 and on sale for 2.99..wow thats a good deal so I pick one up...

I bring it home and soak it for a while..I let it dry and I put it in with my boa...He automatically falls in love with it and goes in and stay's there for a while...



so of course a week later he's soaking and stay's there all day..so i rush out to petco and ask them where the hides were and they told me that they had been pulled from the ball pythons cages and put for sale...

I buy "ZOOMED MITEOFF" which I heard someone say they use and this thing sucks...I could see the mites snorkeling in the crap...

So I go to walgreens (drug Store) and buy "STOP LICE" in home lice spray containing 0.50% permethrin for $5.99 I cleared out the cage and washed everything down, lightly sprayed everything including hide and the un-printed news paper. I let everything air out for a bout 45 min, while my BOA soaked...

I dried him up, Fed him and put him in his cage...

I woke up this morning to check up on him and it looks like an ATOMIC mite bomb went off...all laying out DEAD....

I guess I got my self a Provent-a-mite substitute....

What ever I buy, I freeze it or bake it before it goes in the cage.

PaM is very good stuff ive been using it as of late, but be careful the information i recieved on lice treaments, was that the isomers were different in the lice product and the pam, and could lead to neurological disorders....but the info came from the maker of the pam, and a friend of mine who works for terminix told me something similiar

I absolutely love the sarcastic post title, hahahahaha. But I can't stand them little bastards. I go with the nix formula. That took a battle I was fighting for a while to a screeching halt. It kicks *** when used. I will swear by it plus it is pretty cost effective.

I get the heebee jeebee s when I go there they just built one by me. I asked them to put up the poster I made from here and the manager said they can only put it up in the breakroom. not even in the reptile section I asked she said no. said ok what r ya gonna do cant win them all. PETCO what a crock BAH HUMBUG.

Wow that is disgusting. I didn't realize mites were so resilient. I once bought a fruit fly culture at Petco for my dart frogs and when I got it home I realized it was covered in mites! Fortunately the dart frogs eat the mites, but they destroy the fruit fly culture (that I spent 10 dollars on). Stupid Petco.

Yeah I know....Ive had snakes for a while now and never had a mite problem....PETCO had to mess up my winning streak

Wow, that's a shame.

I wish these people that work at pet stores like that were more informed about reptiles. I mean mites to a snake are just like a flea infestation on a warm blooded animal.

They need like a special class on herp care if they are going to work in that section of the store.

like J said i wish they were 2 i hate how all the dog and cat stuff goes on sale but the reptile stuff....NEVER DOES !!! and they know almost nothing about snakes it just ticks me off if you work somewhere KNOW YOUR PRODUCT ya know thats my .02 i say write corporate also

Petco shouldn't be allowed to sell reptiles. I've been to several and I've never seen a truly healthy, well cared for snake at Petco. It's sad to see the conditions some of them live in. It's even worse that they have people working in the reptile section that have probably never even owned a snake.

for wood i wash it in the shower, then wrap it in tinfoil and turn up the oven to 400 and cook for about 15 min, i dont know the actual recommended time.
for anything that would melt, definitely put it in the freezer or soak it in a bleach/water mix.
when i got my hide from petco it was super dirty when i washed it. looked clean, but it was really bad.

Man dude I'm sorry. Yeah that really sucks but atleast you caught it early and got it cleared up. Did it affect all your snakes?
