  • Cage in the works

    Hi all,

I told a few of you i would post some pics as the one cage is being done. This one is only about 3 hours in the works. It is being made of 3/4 birch. I have some very cool ideas I will be doing to this cage. If all works as figured. It will hold humidity and heat great. Also everything should be automatic, temp and humidity. All I need is a full two days and I will have it done. Thanks to the rain here I haven't had much time to work on it..

More pics will come as I progress..

        Re:Cage in the works

Yeah I am building it myself. I have made some very nice custom cages for other people, even made a few double deckers for myself. But if this cage comes together the way i think it will, I will be making all new cages for myself. This one is a 4 foot long by 2 foot wide, by 2 foot high. I plan to make 2 more to do a tripple stack. Then I get to do my 2 6 foot cages..

If anyone is interested in making your own this pic might help. Its what I do. Just get an exacto knife, card board and tape. This one is done on a scale of 2 inches to every foot. I make changes while I am making it, but give me an idea. Like that shelf/hide. It will be fully removable for cleaning. It will be heated by a 18x 18 heat panel and 21 inch heat tape on the bottom in a top sealed setup that will go 2 foot across the cage.

More pics as I find time to finish this. I only ripped the sheet of wood down today, cut the basic opening, dowel and glued it together and put in some tention screws, and did some sanding.

Pretty simple and nice design. I just got mine done today. It's awesome. Should have pics up sometime soon. I started to add shelves to the three enclosures, but had a slight change of mind as the enclosure came out quality style.

              Hey XzyluM,

Keep in mind this is only the first stage. The whole front of the cage is going to be built out with a drop down acrilic or plate glass door for full veiwing, but a step ridge on the insde to avoid and litter spill out. I figure two spin clips will hold it shut with a key lock in the middle. Biggest design I have to work out is I planned on some nice birch moulding around the top and bottom. But since I plan to stack three high, I have to make sure the moulding will join and match the connecting cage. I also plan to put retractable vents that can be adjusted as needed, but I want to do it in a way that the vent is hidden. Once I get this one done, then next ones will go super fast..

Get some pics of the ones you did. I would love to see it.

                Steve,

I like the way your cage is going to be set up, good design, and very practical. You had mentioned that you built some in the past for other people, would you consider building another to sell? If so please let me know. I'm growing tired of my 50 gallon very quickly, with summer here, it is becoming more and more difficult to regulate my temps and keep them constant. It was much easier in the winter.

                    Re:Cage in the works

Thank all.. I can't wait for the weather to break so i can work on it more without the rain.

                    Hey Fonzy,

It would be no problem building and selling as many as wanted. The biggest problem has always been shipping. I have build atleast 20 custom cages local for people. Even a while unit that had many cahes and held a TV, and stero. The cost so far for this plan is not that bad, and its alot stronger then the glass and plastic cages. I can for sure work out a pickup or close delivery. I can check on shipping as soon as its finished and I can weigh it. One delay so far is I want to stain it a weathered grey and then fully seal it with acrylic sealer. Seems everyone doesn't carry that grey stain. Gonna visit Home Depot or Lowes this weekend..

I'll keep you posted.. And thanks for asking.
