  • I Can't Find A Hide!

Hello everyone, hope I posted this in the right spot. Just needed some help on finding a hide. I want something cool lookin'. Right now I am useing a shoe box for my 6 1/2 footer (Ezzie). Not only does it look tacky, she is out growing it. You should see her right this moment..... the box is only half way on top of her. I am going to take a picture right now so I could try to post it later on. It's hillarious. Anyways..... All of the half logs are way to small for her, I would like something other than a clay pot, but that might be my last resort. I mean, I am so desperate, I have checked out trash cans, tupperware, boxes, but they all look so blah! :P Any links or anything would be helpfull. Or what do any of you use? Thanxs for the help in advance...............

    Hey BMoore,

Might have a fix for your problem.. I too ran into the same thing with once the snake gets big, it is impossible to find a nice looking hide for them. I am now using cardboard boxes or coraplas but they still look like garbage IMO.. So I designed 5 different hides. They are made of sealed wood. So they will not flip as easy as most choices, they will be washable and they also double as a shelf if your boa like to climb. I only wish the guy who is making them for me would hurry up. He is doing it on the side. I was going to, but my work has picked up fast and I am doing what I can to keep up with it and finishing my cages and helping here. Don't know how much they will run, but I plan on keeping the costs down. I was told the main ones should be finsihed this weekend. If you want to go a different way, you could always get those hanging basket inserts that are made of some moss with a wire wrap. i know some use them. They hold humidity great, but the one time I used it, it preduced mold in one month. But may be an option for you..

I wished I could have helped more..
Hey if you find any tricks for this that work, please share..

Unfortunately I thing Steve hit the nail right on the head on this one!! Once a snake gets that big, you are going to find it very hard to find a "nice" looking hide that it can fit in. Your best bet is either going to be to make one yourself, or find someone that makes them and buy it! When I had my 4'er I was using the clay pot, not the most eye appealing, but it definitely looked better than most others and was fairly cost-effective. I know this isn't of much help either, but it's the best I can do. Sorry, and good luck.

        Re:I Can't Find A Hide!

Hey, if you go to Wal-mart or Lowes or someplace like that, you can find stuff that works well. For example, you can find alot of time those VERY large flower/tree pots. Some made of clay, other made of plastic. Alot of times you can find them large enough to fit even a 15 ftr. Just get one of those and cut or break a large hole out of one side. Then place it upside down with the hole facing outwards. Then with that, you can paint it or do what ever you want to it to make it look kool, such as paste fake vines all over it, paint it with any design you want, or anything kool like that. Also, I have heard of people using solid laundry baskets and all kinds of things for hides. You could also use 2-3 pieces of plywood, stain or paint it and then screw it together and then place it in one corner of you enclosure. Hope these Ideas help somewhat.

          Re:I Can't Find A Hide!

My brother and I have over 20+ snakes and we don't worry about using hide boxes... we use newspaper in the cage for all of our snakes and they all hide under the paper. The boas and pythons we have range in size from week old hatchlings on up to snakes 10 feet and bigger.. So with this many snakes and the size range that we have we just have newspaper and a water dish in the containers and cages we keep them in... But what evilkarot said is a good idea if you have the space in the cage for those things... but with us we don't have the space in the cages for the snakes...

            Re:I Can't Find A Hide!

Thanx for everyones imput! I was thinking of going to the gardening section to look for something, if I couldn't find anything else where. Steve, if you can remember to let me know, I would love to check out one of the hides you have in progress. That would be great. Ezzie is in a 6x3x3 and has plenty of space with a huge shelf. But the shelf is a little less than half way up so it's not really a secure hide, know what I mean. I saw these really cool hampster igloo's but........... too small. :-\
I am sure I will find something. You know what else is hard to find...... BIG drift wood!!!! I mean I really havn't looked too hard. I was reading on cleaning my own. But I don't know if I trust my self to get it completely sanitized. I mean I am a clean freak and I'm not afraid to use a little elbow grease but I don't want to take the chance!
            Well thanks again everyone!

              Re:I Can't Find A Hide!

              Hey BMoore,

I will have a pic up tonight of one I am just priming right now. I hope to have it painted very cool by tomorrow. I had to make this one fast because one of my girls flipped the heavey log on top of the temp hide I was using that was made out of foamcore.. It may give you some ideas.. I am hoping to have 4 different ones available and 100% perfect by next weekend..
I know the iglos you are refering to. I know one company made giant ones like that or giant ones made to look like a rock with a hole in it.. Biggest problem is when the snake gets bigger, just getting in and comfy the pick the light piece of plastic up or flip it over.. I don't expect to have the same problem with these I am making because they are made out of 1/2 and 3/4 in 13 layer plywood. So they are sturdy, and should be washable (sink, wash and dry..)..

                Re:I Can't Find A Hide!

Sounds Great! I guess I really didn't think I was the only one with this problem! : The hollow rock sounds cool but they definetly need to be more sturdy or it's a waste. Ezzie never seems to actually flip her shoe box over, just kinda takes it for a ride. Know what I mean, when they slither around and it just kinda moves around on top of them.... It's so funny. So do you have any "guess-timation" an how much your gonna sell these for? I think I am gonna get a clay pot for now. It seems like the last time she ate, she hasn't fit in her shoe box quite right. Her belly must be too full. But as soon as you want to sell those hides let me know!

                  Hey BMoore,

Like I promised, here are a couple of images I just took. About 10 secons after I put the design coat on. The inside is smooth and dark grey, the outside is sand texured. My boas seem to love that.. More traction and gives the something like sand to help start a shed.. I would have had this one done tonight, but all this rain is taking forever to let things dry..
This one is 16x23. It will fit some of my bigger boas and I make them so they can be cleaned.. You like the look? Keep in mind the ones that I am going in production with are abit more fancy, but same idea..

WOW, that's an awesome hide! I really like the finish! Those could be a big money maker. And if they do I can say "Yeah.... I got to see the original created by Steve Clark.... I'm cool." hehehhehe
Seriously let me know when your ready to sell............. Of course I would like to see the others............... Oh, and the easier to clean the better, good idea. I need to give you a "cheers" for this one.

                        Thanks BMoore,

To be honest the only reason I am doing this for possible sale and the cages as well is to cover the costs of my rescues and my own hobby snakes..

Thanks for the kind words.. And I expect to have all the info soon. I will keep you posted..
