  • 24/7 Lighting?

I've learned that 24 hour lighting isnt good for boas, and that they need a day/night cycle. I use a 50watt infared heat lamp, although they look more like red light bulbs to me. Does this type of bulb screw them up? Do I need another heat sorce thats not a light? Thanks, just want to double check everything to ensure that my scaled friend is healthy and happy.

No a red bulb will not mess them up they cannot see the red bulb now the basking light they can see it so u would only want to leave that on for 10-12 hours (hope this is right if not i am sure i will be corrected) then shut it off. I leave my red bulbs on 24/7 and i leave my basking light on a timer for 10 hours a day then it shuts off.

Yep red bulb should be okay........ I use black but it actually look's purple. Then during the day I open the blinds and let some light in the room. I just make sure that there will be no sunlight directly on the cages at anytime during the day. For my 6x3x3 cage, I use a ceramic heat emitter.

Well they pretty much covered everything I would hae said. They forgot one thing though. I would stop spending money on those lights and get you a boaphile man I love those cages.

          Beth,

Hi, I am a new user and am about to purchase a hatchling boa. I'm sorry guys that this isn't really on topic, but I really need some info on finding a cage. I noticed you said you had a 6'X3'X3', and I was wondering where you got that and how much it was. Also, i just would like to know where to get one about that size that's hopefully under $400. Anyone with any info. will be much appreciated. Thanks!

              Re:24/7 Lighting?

Just so you know There is no way to get a hatchling boa because they are born live...
They are not born in eggs... They are born in sac's though but more like the one humans are born in...
It is perty cool... This is one of the aspecs of the boa I like....
Have fun with the new snake....
              And check out this site...
He will be able to set you up for around that... that is if you are not temped to get a couple snakes and more cages that is... hehe

              Have fun...

                Re:24/7 Lighting?

Oh ya' 420Yet I would go with a uth even though the light bulb is ok... They are nice because you have a heat source that is controled easyer...
But it is really the factors that count against the bulb that make the swich the sincible one...
The bulbs can bust and drop glass in the cage and maybe on the snake... when they break they can cause fire...
Plus you have to keep a couple around just incase you brake one or it just burns out... It is your only heat sorce so you have to keep it going...
And the hole snakes can't see the light thing.. Is a theory at best.. I know when I go in my room and turn on my red light(Yes I use them I have not proven it wrong yet... heh) They all look right at it then me...
So I don't really give it much thought....
Well any ways the hot screen under the light... or glass as it may be.. gets perty hot and although it is perty unlikly the snake will burn it self on it. It can happen and does....
Well if anything I would at least get a che.(ceramic heat emmitter) And replace the bulb... It will take away most of the negatives from the aboved mentioned...
                Well good luck...

                  Re:24/7 Lighting?

o i have a uth as well but the red light i use is really dull can't even see it on so i know they won't see it if i can barely see it. I know there are some red bulbs that run bright but the one i have runs dull it is called RED HEAT u can get them at pet co for around 8 bucks.

                    Re:24/7 Lighting?

Yup I have ones just like that... I use them in my reg. light in the room... So when I go in after dark I don't mess with them...
I figure it is at least better then a full on light bulb...
Well if it works for you good... That is all that really matters...

                      Re:24/7 Lighting?

Epimeno.... My friend LEE is right. I had the cage built. Although I could have spent a lot, I paid $160 total for supplie's. I made my cage out of plexiglasss and plywood. It's not the best quality, but I like it and think it look's good. It may not last forever................. I got all my idea's from this forum and this thread of Cages and enclosure's. You just need to take your time reading about what your snake will need in it's enclosure.
But like Red said, I would check out the boaphile's. I want one too, for another snake I recently got. And I don't think Red was trying to be rude about the "hatchling" thing. It's easy to be confused when your a newbie. One time I was at a pet store and the girl working there was like 18 years old. I asked her about the age of this baby red tail boa and she said "I think it's like 6 month's old; it's a hatchling." I laughed at her only because she is an emlpoyee there and she is suppossed to know!! LOL

As far as the snake's being able to see the black/red/purple heat bulb's.............. I've alway's wondered myself.......
I have an undertank heater for two of the cage's. For some reason 2 of my 3 snake's don't really like it. They hardly ever go on that part of the tank.

                        Red,

Thanks for the info on the viviparous/oviparous part, and also for the cage stuff. I checked boaphile's web page, but to get one the size I'd like, it says I'd have to order like 6 of 'em at least to be able to get them shipped. I live in a small town in Arkansas, so I'm not sure how I'm gonna get one. I don't really have the skills to build one myself, and I would trust the cage much more to keep the humidity and temp. levels good and constant in a plastic cage. Thanks to you too, Beth, for your suggestions. I don't know where I'll go, but vision cages don't get big enough, except one that's like $900. Anyway, if anyone hear's, sees, etc. anything, let me know please. Thanks.

                        Your Fellow Herper,

                        Jeremy

You must be mistaken... You can buy one and have it shipped infact it is free... the shipping is part of the cost.... Give jeff a call... he will straiten it out....
I am sure you just must have miss read...

Get a boaphile, or use a CHE in your current cage.

Dude, the biggest you'de ever need the cage is like 6 feet long. If you do get a boaphile, get 2 422D's in expandable caging and for an extra 50 bucks, i think it is, they'll set you up with installed heating. If you thik you can swing it, you could build the same size cage cheaper even if you use the best wood, oak. As far as the lighting i use a basking bulb during the day for about 8-10 hours then that gets turned off and immediately my night glow bulb, (looks like a blacklight), is turned on. I got all 3 lights on timers. The third one you really don't need but I just got it anyways, it's a uva/ubv flourescent bulb w/fixture but those are mainely for turtles and lizzards and rep's like that. Snakes really don't need that kind of bulb. Hope this helped. 8)
