  • Has anyone bought a cages by design cage?

Hi, I just bought 2 pink pastel boas, 1 male and 1 female, and they are both around 18-20 inches, I would like to get them a cage that they can grow into... I would like it to be a nice cage, something I can put into my den or living room... I was checking out the cages by design cages and they are real nice but a bit pricey...has anyone had any experience with these cages? Are they worth the money? I did look into building a cage but really it would only save me a couple hundred bucks and not be anywhere near as nice... the cage I am considering is 48" tall 72" long and 36"deep... that should be big enough for 2 adult redtails??

Cages by design is over priced in my opinion. Boas don't really need a whole lot of room either. Floor space is the only thing boas need.

Look into boaphile plastic cages. They are well made, hold humidity, affordable, easy to clean, easy to set up, and easy to move. Not to mention, they are VERY nice looking cages. You would be pleasantly surprised to see how nice 2 cages look stacked. Very professional.

I know this is a debatable statement, but I would also house each boa in a different enclosure. They are solitary creatures unless it is mating season. They don't enjoy competing for the best spot of the cage.

They want more of a display though. Boaphiles are nice but I wouldn't put them on display in my house! I know someone that has had a cage from CBD and it is pretty good. I like thier new Majestic line, but it is expensive. It is made out of real wood, not particle board like the normal line. How about some pics of those pastels.

I completely understand wanting a display type cage, I would suggest housing the boas individually though. All six of my boas like to explore their cages and climb on branches if they have them, however I have noticed this can get difficult with my large female and just about everything has to come out before I can remove her (not difficult for her to climb, just hard to remove her when she is wrapped around branches plants etc.). I think as long as you understand that you may have to wrestle a bit to get them out when they are older and that you have way more to clean it's fine to go with a large display type cage. I have read a few good reviews about the cages you are thinking about but don't know anyone personally who has one, I do know that their Majestic line is all aluminum on the inside to prevent the wood from getting moisture damage which is a huge consideration when discussing wooden furniture style cages.

          Mat.

I completely disagree! I think Boaphiles look awesome on display. I'm not sure why you would want your snakes on display in a high traffic area but people are gonna do what they're gonna do.

I just can't justify that expense. Especially when none of those extra dollars are in benefit of the snake. If you want the BEST enclosure for your snake, I would go with a Boaphile. If not a Boaphile, than an AP or ProLine cage at the very least.

Now about housing two snakes together, some people will come on and tell you "I've housed multiple snakes together for years". Here's the thing though...Is it really worth the risk? If you were to do a list of pros and cons, the cons would far outnumber the pros. Once you do that it becomes blatantly obvious why you should house them seperately.

...and it can be dangerous when they do...

I have a cages by design enclosure. It is $1400 msrp. I got mine used for $300. I don't have it put together yet but I will tell you this. Had I ordered it and paid msrp, I would have sent it back. It will look great once it is together, but it is not worth $1400 in my opinion.

they are sometimes a waste of money but they are nice to have i have 1 display tank i use as one of my quarintine tanks then my other quarintine tank is in my bedroom..... once they are done in quarintine they get moved to a rack in the snake room ..... but it is nice to have a display tank i would not spend the money on a cages by design tank by any means ..... i have a nice 40 gal tall with wood trim and a wood stand and it works real nice for display and quarintine

Re: Has anyone bought a cages by design cage?

CBD cages are way too expensive. Pretty, but not necessary for the cost. I know someone that just got a massive 5 footer from CBD, all I can think when I see it is how many Boaphiles could they have bought for the money.

IMO: save yourself some money and get a more efficient (and cost effective) Boaphile or Pro-Line enclosure. And a proper snake enclosure will look just as nice as any uber high-end terrarium.

And I have to agree with Scott's sentiment. A boa isn't going to care if the enclosure cost $2,000.00 or $200.00. As long as it's helping keep the boa safe and healthy that's all that matters.

i'm not one of those "cuz they cool" people they are cool but i got in to them for looks and breeding and i'm not a noob anymore scott i have about 2grand invested in my boas, I still have a display tank because when you drop 300-400-1000 or more on a snake its kind cool to show it off a little while its in quarintine i know the boa could care less its in the tank cost 200 or 20000 what do you quarintine your boas in? thats the main reason i have my display tank is for quarintine but at least while its in quarintine the cage looks nice while people are sitting by it

I checked them out and was going to buy them but I did my homework and ended up having one built from a guy in canada from Connels World Terr. I gave him the dims and he is creating a work of art / furniture.

                              Mike -

Just so you know, my response wasn't directed towards you at all. You posted a response while I was still typing up mine. I hit "Reply" after reading Scott's first response. So, I wasn't critiquing your use of a CBD enclosure.

And what you choose for a quarantine cage is your own business. Hell, mine's a glass tank I got for free that I've modified the snot of of it to keep in heat and humidity (I even have a UTH pad between the screen top and a layer of insulation that helps radiate heat down into the cage) There's duct tape all over the screen top to hold insulation and plexi in place, and I've got newspaper wrapped around the sides and and back with 1/2 inch foam core insulation underneath to help retain the UTH heat below. It's a God-awful looking set-up, but it creates a steady and ideal environment for a new snake. Each one of my boas has been through it and it does what I need it to do. So I can't judge anybody's quarantine set-up!
