  • question for clay, pic of new cage

Here's a pic of my new enclosure I built...

You can see I still need one vertical board on the right side, this is thanks to Lowe's employees poor measuring skills, LOL.
Anyway, this cage is mealmine with pine on the front and1/4" Lexan glass, it cost me approximately $90 for the materials to build 2 cages like this. This cage measures 4' x 2' x 1' , my question for Clay is, how large of a boa can be kept in these? I thought I read somwhere that a rule of thumb is one square foot of surface area for one foot of boa, is this correct? If so this cage can hold a boa upto 8'? Thanks,

very nice looking cage. i would say yes if you had a boa that is 8 feet long he could live in that cage. if you are like me though, i like to give my snakes room to move about whent hey get big. i am in the process of building one for my boa, and it to is melamine, i built it 4x2x2. i plan on putting a basking shelf in the cage, or something like that. the total for all my stuff was 62 dollars and i challenge anyone to buy a cage of this size for that price. well you cage looks really nice and congrats. i really liek the sliding doors, they look good i just dont have the patience to wait on the tracks, i might do this with the next ones i build though. iwill probably finish that up tonight cause i am going to visit my inlaws.

Nice cage. I made one recently that is very similar, may i ask how are you are heating the cage? Maybe even see pics of how it is done, i am very new to the cage building set-up thing. If anyone else has pics of how there cages like this are heated plz post'em i would luv to see them so i can choose the best method for me< looking for reasonably inexpensive, but yet effective system to house my pets>.

I just use an Under Tank Heater on one side for a warm spot. There is an inch between the bottom of the enclosure and where the enclosure rests, this allows for air circulation to the UTH. I also sit the water dish so it covers half of the UTH, this should help with humidity. Since I have a room designated for reptiles, I only need a warm spot in case the boa wants to be a little warmer. In my reptile room I use a space heater, it keeps the temps at 84-88 during the day, and I manually turn it down at night to about 78-82, so my ambient air temps should be good.
