  • Carbon-dioxide Euthanasia Chamber

I read a post on here last month about the baking soda and stuff. It inspired me to use my old paitball gear to make this for my jumbo rats. It should make things more peaceful then with old wack wack wack is it dead yet.

A couple tiny suggestions. The smaller the space, the less Co2 will be needed to get the job done. That height is unnecessary. Also, if you use a layer of something that is absorbent on the bottom of the container when gassing them, you will be more happy with rats that are cleaner and not soaked from their urine.

Jeff is deffinately correct on that absorbent it can get nasty.
also when applying the co2 allow it in very slowly to the point where you can
barely use it. Some may not care for humane but if you go to fast it is actually
very painful for the rats I don't remember whos study it was that I read that
but I have seen a difference. You'll also see a big difference in how long it takes
for the pinkies to go out before the big ones. the big ones usually only take about 30 sec. pinkies some times up to 3 to 4 minutes.

Pinkie trick. Put the pinkies in a plastic zip lock bag with a couple layers of paper towels. Squeeze out all the air and blow the bag full of pure Co2. The pinkies will go to sleep very quickly this way.

I really need one of these but I can't for the life of me find any co2 other than walmart bb gun ones which I don't know how you'd open that without blowing off your hand or something.

Good luck with it. I would love to build one. Would make things so much easier, ecspecially now that I need to keep 4 sizes of rats vs 1

In the paintball gear get a co2 tank, they should have them if not u can buy them and get them fileed at dunhams or any sport retailer.

Sometimes you can get them at ace hardware and get them refiled. I got mine online with a gun and a bunch of other stuff but have it refiled at ace. The coil is called a remote, be very careful and very slow to release the Co2 or it will shoot out so fast it will blow the rat around as I found out. ps Im pretty sure all walmarts have atleast a 9oz tank. Chech sporting goods.

Why does it take so much longer for the pinkies to become unconscious? That seems counter-intuitive to me.

I know, doesn' it? I'm sure it's related to their lung capacity and respiration rate. Even how efficient their body is at gas exchange even though with this it's just CO2 in and CO2 out.
