I just bought a baby boa and have him in a 10 Gallon glass terrarium. I bought him an exo terra heating pad, the 8x8 model and it is warm. It is affixed to the bottom of the tank with it's self adhesive. Is this the best way to keep the temperature right for him? Is this a reliable product?

Re:exo terra eat wave 8x8 pad question
Hello Jiem,
First welcome to the forums..
Now as far as that UTH, yeah they work fine, just need to get some type of control and monitor the temps so you don't burn the boa.. Also I know you will get a bunch that will say a 10 gallon tank is too small for your boa.. It is.. You will need no smaller then a 20 gallon for the first year.. I suggest you try to get the biggest cage possible so you won't have to keep up grading.. Its best if you can either make a cage that is 4x2x2 or get one that some places on line sell. That will be the size your boa will need in its adult years.. Keeping a boa in a tank too small can cause many health problems, mainly with its spine and circulation.. So try to get a bigger cage ASAP.. Also one thing you will find with glass tanks is they do not hold heat and humidity very well. Your boa will need the warm side to be about 90 degrees and the cool side to drop no lower then 78 degree's and you will need a tank humidity average to be about 60-70%... Get a good temp guage and humidity guage. Go to WalMart. They are like 15 bucks for a combo unit. The stick on guages they sell at pet shops are not acturite at all..
Take some time and read Clay's care guide articals.. Lots of good info to start you and your boa off in the right direction..
Hope this helps..

Re:exo terra eat wave 8x8 pad question
Thanks for the info. I planned on getting a bigger cage for him later this week, just happened to have the 10 Gallon tank laying around and figured it would do till I moved into my house. It should be finished being built in late october or early november and then I can get a more permanent solution. If the 10 Gallon is too small in a couple weeks I will definitly buy a 20 Gallon in the interim. I'll find the articles and start reading ASAP. I want to know everything I can so I don't make too many mistakes. I'll grab a temp and humidity guage this week at walmart, are these kept in the pet section or somewhere else? Where can I get a control for the heat pad? Any brand in particular that I should grab?Comment

Re:exo terra eat wave 8x8 pad question
We took some pics last night. Here they are, my son wouldn't hurry and take a pic so you can see how impatient I was. I do have a new concern though, the guy at the reptile shop sold me brownish/red substrate and I can't recall if he said it was cedar or not. He said it was the better kind and held humidity better so I bought it. I finally found the care guides( the main site doesn't work too well with the opera browser) and now I am concerned he might have sold me cedar. I have to go in tomorrow and get the first meal so I will ask.

Hey jlem,
Looks like Cyprus multch in the cage.. But please do make sure its not Cedar Or Pine.. If you think it may be, just use newspaper for now. I use newpaper all the time, its cheap and easy to clean..
Good luck with your baby... Glad to see the family is having fun with him..
