  • Your favorite temp gun and why?

    Hi all,

Looking to get a temp gun and was curious what you guys are using and the things you like about it.

Most important would be accuracy and durability of course. I'd rather pay a lot more for one that will last than have it crap out on me often.

Can't go wrong with a nice Raytek.

Alot of people use the ones from Pro exotics and are highly recomended.

I like the gun from Reptile basics

412L IR Thermometer - Reptile Basics Inc

412L with a 12:1 D:S ratio, compact styling, laser aiming, large back lit display and a lot more. It is our personal favorite for reptile use and it blows away the competition!

The 412L uses 2- AAA batteries (included). This IRT is ideal for users that need a range of a whopping 48 inches or less. A very large step up from the lower 5:1 and 6:1 D:S models from the leading competitors. Temperature range is -76 to 932 F or -60 to 500 C. Emissivity is preset at .95. Probably the nicest feature of this unit is the "always on" MAX mode. This shows you the maximum reading and the actual reading while you scan the enclosure-giving you the basking and background temps all at the same time. 179 grams with batteries. Have questions about what Infrared thermometer is right for you and what makes our models so much better? Check our Tempgun FAQ in the Customer Service Areas for more info on which unit is right for you.

What exactly do you mean? From what I understood is you point it at a spot and press the trigger (I guess there's something like that) and it will tell you where you are pointing. This model has the ability to pan around and it will retain this info and show you the peak during the swipe as well as your current spot ? If so, that definitly sounds handy.

I will be mere inches (up to 1-2 foot) when using it. I can't see me being farther away for the majority if that matters too.

You hold the trigger and can get realtime feed back and as you do so it will park the highest recorded temp and display the current temp your scanning. Handy for ambient temp sampling. Also, the D:S of 12:1 is very important. Its distance to sampling ratio. If you go cheap like say $20 you will need to sample very close. The cheap Pro Exotics and Reptile Basics have a D:S of 1:1 so for every inch away from your spot you go the sample size increases. So at one inch away your sampling a 1 inch spot. At a foot your sampling a foot. You think you won't be far but you will not want to be an inch away all the time.

With Hots being far away is more of a concern. But at 12-24 inches with the 412L at reptile basics you will still be sampling a small area (square inches not square feet)

            Do yourself two favors:

            1) buy the 412L and never look back
            2) read the FAQ below for education on temp guns

This is the one I have and it works great. I've had it about 6 years. Mainly got it because the tool guy had it on his truck!

I use the Raytek MT6. Granted it's the only temp gun I've used, but I'm very happy with it.

This is what I have as well. To me the most important factor is the ratio. 1:1 = at one inch you are testing a 1" spot. At 1 foot you are testing a one FOOT spot.

12:1 = at 1 FOOT you are testing a 1 INCH spot. Very useful if you actually want to know what temperatures are in various spots.

Just an update. I got my 412L yesterday from Reptile Basics and I really like it a lot and it couldn't really be easier to use.

On a side note I bought some other stuff from them too and my snakes really like their hides a lot it seems and their shipping was pretty quick also.
