Sad Day When I Found This....

:'( This is what i came across one day when out in the woods awhile back.. He was in a leghold trap. > > This is a great horned owl.. His leg was damaged and one wing was alittle messed up from trying to get out of the trap.. Me and the kids quietly and quickly thru a shirt over him and took his leg out of the trap and we took him back to the house and set him up to be rehabilitated, poor guy couldnt even walk.. took alot of time befour he was ok to release..we named him hooter.. Kids would shoot chipmunks and ground squirels and catch mice to feed him as he would only take wild prey.. Kids would feed him by dangling the prey with hemostats and down the hatch it would go..Took alot of work to get this guy back to normal.. We were all happy the day i released him out back in the woods.. brought tears to my eyes to see one more animal saved from sure death if i hadnt found him.. :'( And the leghold trap was distroyed....

That is so sad about the owl, but at least there are people like you out there that will help it. s9.gif I most definantly give you props for that!!!!!

I hate stuff like that... not you rescuing it but the trapping..
Do you know what the hell the person was hunting with a leg trap...

8)Theres all kinds animals we have rescued over the yrs.. ducks with plastic pop or beer can holders on the feet and neck, im glad we dont see that no more or while out on the boat ducks or birds with fishing line stuck on them cutting off blood or a fish hook and line stuck in there beaks or on part of there body.. Deer that have been shot with a bow and them left suffering, or hit by a car needing to be put out of there missory, animals tangled in barbwire, as far as the traps go, ive come across a few and gottin rid of them, or wire snairs that catch them by there leg or throat, we found a pit once some idiot kids dug and put pointy sticks in facing upwards so that whatever fell in the pit would die.. But i was very sad to see this owl in that trap, you dont get to see a great horned owl very often as they are only out at night huntting, we here them all the time here at the house..The other thing is i never here the WhipperWill anymore like the distruction of all the state forest has made them up and vanish.. :'( :'(

HI,
I wanted to personally thank you for that rescue, My favorite critter has to be wild owls, they are mans best friend and have a real nitch in the eco system.
  They are  real pain to keep they need furry food and lots of calcium in their diet or they will develope bone problems.
Many rapters have to regurge fur with mucus or they will die there's a bird term for this I think its called casting . I had a couple screech owls in fla as a kid ..Thanks again maybe he'll have little owls someday.

I used to hear a bird called a nighthawk in FLa its in the starling family I believe and at dusk you could hear them drop 50-70 ft in the air straght down and catch a moth or night flying bug , the would pull out of their dive at 6 ft making this loud air craft sound from the air crossing their wings . Neat haven't seen them in fla lately when I visit. We are proably stil killing animals with DDT even though its no longer used in the US,, them south american countries use just about anything that works. and it all winds up in the ocean... DOug
