usually to find the laws relative to your state you would check with either Fish & Wildlife or the Department of Agriculture in your state. You could also check with your state herp association even. They usually have links or a page for such information on their site. Also you should check on not only snakes but any other type of herp which you keep or intend to be keeping at all as to what the laws are for that particular ss of reptile.

Who exactly do you contact to find out about permit requirements, etc in your county/state? (I'm out of city limits so city ordinance is of no concern to me personally.)

I was reading an article on another forum about this poor guy who was visited by animal control and may be required to get rid of all his python collection, because his local county had an ordance about owning pythons and constrictors Boas?.
