  • School is finally over!

As some of you know, I have been MIA for the past 6 weeks. From 9am to 9pm, I was going to school to be a Police K-9 trainer. It's finally over, so I'm back. Hopefully I'll have time to post on here more often. Also, if anybody needs their dog trained for personal protection, shoot me a PM lol. Have a good one everybody.

Congrats on the accomplishment. That's definately no easy task. What trainer's school did you go through and who will you be training with or for?

I'm a K-9 handler in Oklahoma and know a lot of trainers throughout the state.

        Again... congrats!

I went to National K-9 in Columbus, OH. As soon as I get my OPOTA certification, I will be starting my own business. Right now I'm just waiting to get my IACP papers in the mail. Will you be attending the IACP conference at Triple Crown in March?

              Re: School is finally over!

As much as I would love to go, I doubt that my department will let me. We had a dog pass from a heat stroke in July and I'm trying to get him replaced.

I've been testing several dogs lately, but the Chief is being a little picky over money. You know as well as I do that in the K-9 world it's either pay now or pay later. I'd rather pay now and not have to trade out a lot of street time for training and finishing a dog out.

But, that's above my pay grade. So, it all depends on how this ends up and how our K-9 budget is at that point.

I know what you mean. What do you guys usually budget for training a single dog? In my area, it's around the $15k mark for the dog and training. That includes scent detection, tracking and trailing, attack and out command, crowd control, suspect frisk, prisoner escort, building search, the utility course, and obedience. I don't know how extensively you guys train your dogs for things like crowd control and suspect frisk because some departments don't want that kind of thing.
