  • It's been a rough month. :(

    Well,
I don't know how things will go tomorrow, but I'm hoping for the best.

Shortly before Christmas, my daughter and I were out Christmas shopping. We were having fun and laughing, when all of the sudden she said she needed to sit down. She was having shortness of breath and heart pains.

It took about a minute for it to pass. Then she was alright. She said it has happened before, but it hadn't been that bad. Normally it only lasted a few seconds and there had never been heart pain before. Of course, this was the first time she had ever mentioned anything to me. I was concerened, but she said she was fine. She had planned on visiting her friends after Christmas and she didn't want to change her plans.

She seemed fine for the next few days. So, I allowed her to visit her friends. I just figured she was overly excited. She had a great time at her friends house and she's always been healthy. I didn't give what had happended anymore thought.... Until it happened again.

On New Years Eve, it got "worse". This time it lasted about 5 minutes. I was able to get her a appointment at the hospital and we left immediately. She had 2 more atttacks of shortness of breath and heat pains on the way there. Then another in the waiting room. Fortunately, they took her in as soon as we got there. The doctor ordered an EKG and X-rays. He said they both looked fine. The doctor felt she could just be having stress, due to the Holidays. He did an exam and determined what she was feeling was actual heart pains and ordered an "Echo". That's where they check the heart out with a sort of ultra sound device. We had to wait until the 13th for that appointment. When get got there the tech was confused, because they normally don't do it on people under the age of 18. Since she was close to 18, they went ahead and did it.

Anyway, tomorrow we get the results of the Echo. We'll be seeing a Cardiologist. She's only had one more attack since New Years Eve and it was very mild. I hope they don't find anything wrong.

Sarah turned 18 yesterday. We did dinner and a movie. We had a lot of fun. I really enjoy spending time with my little girl. Even though she's not very little anymore. She will be starting College in the Fall. She's going to be a Veterinarian.

Anyway, I just thought I let people know what's been going on. I don't respone to posts and/or pm's in a very timely manner these days. I guess my mind is sort of pre-occupied.

Re: It's been a rough month.

Her problem sounds very similar to some of the issues I was having when I was just a few years younger than her. Unfortunately for me even after years of testing with all kinds of specialists the only answer I found was of my own research and finally just an agreement from the doctors. Turned out it was mild panic attacks that would cause a flare up of the reflux disease that they didn't know I had and the reflux into the esophagus would cause really bad pains in my chest and heart and would make it pretty hard to breathe. If she's ever complained of a sour stomach or any heart burn at all it may be something to look into. You wouldn't think a little acid reflux could cause that kind of reaction, but it appears it can when exacerbated to a certain level.
Hope all goes well and you can get the problem nailed down and treated.

Re: It's been a rough month.

Sounds like a Panic Attack, I used to get them about twice a week from about 16-18 years old..I used to get them for no reason, mainly brought on by Stress, Nervousness, Over Excitement, or just being to Hyper. I had to take Xynax for a few months and learned to somewhat control them.

Either way, I hope everything turns out for the best and is something simply treated.

Re: It's been a rough month.

Linda... Your family is most definately in our prayers.

Another thing that you might bring to the physicians attention is Pleurisy.

It is basically an inflammation of the lining of the pleura surrounding the lungs.

I have had a couple of go-rounds with Pleurisy and they were both around this time of year. One when I was around 18-19 years old and another when I was around 22-23.

Both times, the symptoms were the same. A shortness of breath along with mild to severe chest pain. The chest pain was so severe at times that I felt as if I were having a heart attack.

Luckily I worked in an acute care hospital pharmacy at the time and was on a personal level with a few of the physicians. After discussing the symptoms and a quick check-up, the doctor diagnosed the Pleurisy and prescribed a Medrol Dose-pak, which is a tapering dose of the cortico-steroid methylprednisolone.

I was feeling much better within a few days.

Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going!
