  • WOAH!!! What is that?

Can anyone identify this snake and its species. Early this morning I received a photo via text of this snake from my partner and he never gave me any other information. I would love to know what type of snake this is.

    Thank you.

Dominican red mountain boa, calico morph. Typically they range from red to orange. Not a common species in the US as the babies prefer to feed on anoles for a while before they will convert over to mouse pinkies.

They are easily handled, husbandry much like a BCI, usually chill, and the adults get around six to seven feet long. They are semi-arboreal and make a great display snake.

It's a Calico Dominican Red Mountain Boa. Calico is a color morph, and this image has been floating around for a while, but it's the only one I've seen.

That's awesome! Seems like it would be a fun breeding project...

Yes! I know a breeder who was selling babies for $250 each unsexed and like a whole clutch for $5000

I knew of this snake previously, they are fabulous!

And the Jamaican boa also tends to want anoles for a good while before they can be persuaded to switch to rats. The Jamaican boa is supposedly protected and illegal to keep. I say "supposedly" because there is really little or nothing being done here to protect them and their habitat is fast disappearing.

Jamaican boas are legal in the US. They just can't be transported interstate.
