  • Malware Warning

I haven't really been particularly active on this site, as I (knock on wood/thankfully) haven't been having any issues with my Little Snork, and I've otherwise been preoccupied, but today when coming to visit in some free time my browser gave me a warning saying that this site is on a black list for distributing malware. I was wondering two things:
Fellow users: Have any of you gotten a similar warning? If so, what browser are you using? (I'm using Opera btw)
Mods: Same questions, but also does anyone know how or why this site may have gotten blacklisted, and/or how to fix this issue?

Don't get me wrong, pretty much the only files I'm willing to accept from this site right now is cookies, and honestly, at their worst, those are pretty harmless. But, in the meantime, I'm certainly not going to be watching any posted videos or opening any pictures and had I received such a warning upon my first visit, I would have clicked "Go back safely"

    Re: Malware Warning

The forum is currently running on an outdated (unpatched) version of vBulletin software. It's a known issue that external links, especially directly from Facebook, are broken and sometimes redirect to unsavory sites. An upgrade was planned for early September, but that hasn't happened yet. The only people who can update the software to patch the security holes are the admins, and I'm not sure what is being done about it. I'll tag them here and hopefully they can work to get it fixed.

      Re: Malware Warning

I had a random porn pop up, but that was a once in the 4-20 times I check a day. That being said, I use Sandboxie on Google Chrome for everything. I used to use an image of my computer on a virtual machine because my primary OS was Linux, but I switched to window primary because I use it so often it wasn't practical to keep using the virtual machine.

I've had no warnings or pop-ups at all (I use Google Chrome & use anti-virus too) but thanks for sharing this issue.

Aaahhh, that makes sense. Well, hopefully it'll get taken care of soon, but otherwise, that seems rather benign.

Rough crowd, for the purposes of personal amusement, I'll assume this happened just that one time you were trying to show something interesting to a friend or family member. Please don't correct me if I'm wrong.

              Re: Malware Warning

Thinking about it, that one time I got the porn pop up was before I had the address saved. I clicked into the website via a link from Google. I was slightly hesitant about checking in at work because of the pop up. But it hasn't happened since. Also my work place doesn't care if any NSFW websites pop up. Just don't let anyone see it because if they get offended, that is when there is an issue. Productivity > everything else at my work.

                Re: Malware Warning

I got the redirected porn (I think it was an adult dating site but X rated!) at work by typing the address in IE. My bookmarks weren't working (on my network drive and sometimes our machines have to be manually told to look at that drive). So I ensure that my bookmarks are available now before hitting this forum. At home, when I was telling my wife about this (and showing her), I got a message that we had a virus and our PC might not come back up if we attempt to restart. It was all very weird but made me pay attention to what I'm doing.

                  Re: Malware Warning

                  I work in networking/VoIP.

Blacklist warnings can come across on a safe site. Reason being is there is a blacklist "pool" of IP Addresses that are "bad". These IP's can be used/duplicated but no longer attached to the host of the "bad" site. In turn will return a warning.

This happens with major companies as well. I worked for a place that brought up a new hosted cloud server with a blacklisted IP and none of the customers could access until we whitelisted the IP.

                    Re: Malware Warning

I was getting redirects to virus page by accessing root directory before ever joining, almost made me not trust the site. Seems the site needs an update for security patches and possibly a scan for introduced virus.

As stated before, it's an older version of the VBulletin software. There is an upgrade that was scheduled, but only two people (red names) can do it. One has had some health issues and one just moved 1/3 of the way across the country and hasn't gotten completely settled and back into the routine of RTB yet.

But it needs to happen soon, that much is for sure.

Any updates on this? If it looks like those owning this site are having issues, I would be happy to take over ownership (and overhead costs) to keep the forum actively updating and work on growth.
