  • Show/Expo Hygiene

I'm going to Tinley on Saturday, and I've kind of been wondering what kind of precautions everyone takes to reduce the risk to their own animals when they go to a show. I've become increasingly worried that I could accidentally bring home mites, an RI, or even much, much worse to my snakes. Off the top of my head, all I can think of to do is to minimize handling at the show, and then take a shower and wash your clothes right when you get home. Is there anything else that I should do? Am I being excessively paranoid (do people actually catch things there)? What about if you bring an animal home from the show? Are there extra quarantine procedures beyond the normal six months in a separate room?

I pretty much try to avoid handling animals unless I'm serious about buying them for several reasons. 1. Undue stress on the animal 2. Likely to 'pick up' unwanted pests 3. Taking up the seller's valuable time.

That being said, I do wash the clothes I was wearing immediately after coming home. Maybe not so much from Tinley but the smaller shows we have around here, most definitely!

Quarantining should be a given and should be taken seriously with every. single. purchase. no matter where you bought it from. Simple and effective.

Post pictures from the show and enjoy yourself, it's like the ultimate candy store to a herper.

Well said @zamora, just was your frequently during the show and "as stated" wash up thoroughly before you handle yours at home. You more likely to transfer something to your pets than catch an illness yourself other than a cold or something like that. Hope this helps. Have fun.

Oh, no, I was definitely only worried about my pets -- if I caught anything myself, I'm sure I'd get over it (and if not, well, this world is awful anyway, so I'm not sure that I'd be too upset, at least as long as someone else took care of my snakes lol). That's a really good point, though, about washing your hands while you're there; I'm sure that would help prevent the spread of diseases between animals at the show.

Every vendor will have hand sanitizer on their tables...use it. As far as catching something yourself, ask everyone that was at Tinley year before last, most of us came home with 'convention crud' and that year was horrible, I was out of work for a week and I NEVER MISS WORK FOR SICKNESS!

I believe they call that the "brown bottle flu", which is a common affliction after Tinley weekend.

That would not be so in my case. Wine arrives in green or clear bottles. *tsk, tsk* Mr. "Here is a tree".

I actually tried to pick up a case of this flu, just ended up having a lot of fun at the auction.
