  • Emerald Tree boa

    Hi all,

Have a question for anyone who has owned or does own a Emerald Tree boa. I may have one coming in as a rescue. It is not an abused snake, just one that their owner moved and couldn't take with them, so it ended up at a local vets office. I was wondering how their over all temperment was. I have always been somewhat interested in them and had an adult one awhile back, but this one was not handleable at all. As a matter of fact this one tagged someone who used to come in to help out with the resuces. Kinda funny that this guy was a self proclaimed expert on ETB's so I let him deal and care for it on his own until he got tagged on the back of the head and went home and never came back.. Good free help is so hard to find..LOL
So I have been considering one, any thoughts or info?
    Thanks

    Re: Emerald Tree boa

overall emeralds tend to be aggressive. after most people see the size of the teeth they have that is usually enough to figure out that a bite will hurt a whole lot. however i have seen tame emeralds so it is possible for sure. generally they will hide there head if disturbed but some will strike when startled. overall they are more of a look but dont touch snake, best left as a display animal. the more handling usually the more stress, which can lead to a lot of health issues. however despite there nippy attitudes and strict care requirements in my opinion they are one of the most impressive snakes a person can own. if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

      Hi Damian,

Thanks for the info.. I still may end up with one, even if this one from the vet never comes. I will just wait a few months if I have to buy one. I would want a nice display cage for the little guy, unlike what I have right now. If I do get the one at the vet's office, it will have to deal with a 30x30 tank for now. And yeah those teeth are no joke. The one that tagged the guy helping me must have had 1 1/2 fangs. Didn't sink too deep thanks to the skull stopping it, but it did some nice vampire holes..

yea they are awesome snakes and like you will probably be my next investment. the first time i held one of them the size of the head alone was enough to intimidate me. i am going to the june 14th reptile show in PA, who knows i may just come home with an emerald.

I will agree with you on being intimidated the first time. There eyes are so cool, almost evil..LOL..

You mentioned a PA show.. Where in PA? I keep missing the NY shows. Tried to catch one while I was in Ohio and missed that too..

                  Re: Emerald Tree boa

That is always a problem. I told the wife I would slow down abit on animals for abit. All bets off if I find a super price albino boa, or a mate for my dark Boa..

i am hoping to just walk out of there with a solomon island tree boa female to mate with my male. i will also be shopping around for a new cage for my red tail. my biggest problem is going to be when i check out the emeralds and the green trees. i already have a green tree male i am sure he would also like a friend. i will be bankrupt after this show, lol

                              Hey Damian,

No it never did come. He was checked out by a vet and it seemed it had an odd problem. It had its one gland in its mouth that wasn't below the skin. The vet said he was planning on doing surgery on it to correct the problem and the snake never made it through recovery..
