  • Bed a beast

Do any of you all have issues with your snakes getting bed-a-beast in their mouth? I was looking at my snow today and he had a mouthfull, I got as much out as I could without being intrusive. I also just looked at my mean bubblegum and she had a piece sticking out of each nostril. Are they able to get it out of their mouths themselves, or do I need to clean it out and perhaps select a different substrate? As always, thanks for the help in advance.

    Hey 420,

Bedding in the snakes mouth could cause impaction of the intensitins. If you feeding on the bedding, just move you snake into a plastic container to feed and you will avoid the problem.. All my snakes feed on newspaper and have never had a problem..

    Hope that helps..
    Good luck
    Steve

Yea I dont see why your snakes would be having it in there mouths, unless you feed in the enclosure. If you do I suggest putting them in a seperate continer during feeding. That should fix the problem or you can just go with newspaper, thats what I use for my Boa and I will never go back to any other substrate.

Im not a big fan of beddings ..I just stick with paper its cheap, easy to clean, and you don't have to worry about it getting in your Boas mouth..I know its rather unsightly and ugly but I add abunch of plants and hides and it makes it look more natural for the snake..

I never feed on the bedding. Everyone gets fed in feeding tubs. I just happened to look in and see this. It's unusual.

Go with newspaper, is it much safer and much easier to clean!

              Re:Bed a beast

Bed a beast is known for getting into snake's mouth and heat pits. Switch to a different substrate. A good few are: astro turf, newspaper, paper towels, cypress mulch, and aspen. Besides causing impaction, it can also lead to mouth rot.

i am using aspen on my babies and paper with my 4'er cuz a 4x2x2 with substrate in it is hard as heck to clean let alone with aspen in it. lol that is just my opinion though

Our albino corn had problems with scale rot (blisters) when on bed a beast . We put back on turf and she cleared right up.

I've use all types of substrate but I agree with steve, use newspaper, it may not be the best looking but its easy to clean and you don't have to worry bout gettin it in your boa's mouth. Right now I'm using a substrate called Care Fresh, it's a recycled newspaper substrate but like some other substrates, you'll need to feed in a seperate container. 8)

                          HI,
I had a sick BP a few years ago, and my vet told me he likes newspaper it wicks the water away if there's a spill, its easy to spot a wet/ poop spot and he believes the ink may have a slight antibacterail property. SO i ditched they aspen and have been a paper user since. No problems no mites, no blisster disease and I havent' seen any in their mouths,
ALthough my Guyana group do get roudy and trash their cage once in a while ( usally feeding dayor poo day )..
Water all over the place paper here, urates there and poo here. its not to pretty... Make me work like a dog or is that doug
                          doug

                          messy cage....

I use disposable cage liners exclusively. Well, not the actual one's sold as disposable cage liners, but I now buy indented kraft paper which is essentially the same thing but a little thinner. It looks very nice in the bottom of a cage (as opposed to newspaper) and doesn't get messed up as easily since it is all one piece rather than 50 pieces of newspaper.
