I have a friend living nearby who owns a 1 year old California King Snake. He lost the snake in an unheated shed outdoors about 3 months ago at the beginning of fall. Since then it has averaged a temperature range of about 65-50F in the day give or take a few days, and sometimes got as low as 30F at night. To make a long story short he found this guy about 2 weeks back, alive and well in the shed. He is doing fine, except for the fact that he has not eaten, but we think he got a mouse in the shed and that's why hes not hungry. At any rate, it seemed like a cool story so I thought I would share. Does anybody know how long a California King could go in weather like that, it surprises me he didn't freeze to death.

Well, considering that they're native to the area I live in, and we have been having the exact same weather, I'd say indefinately.

Well I have to wonder if it could have survived indefinitely. A lot of snakes can handle some extremes of cold weather over a short period of time but issues of proper food digestion would arise after awhile time if the temp didn't get above 30F or 40F. Every care sheet I have seen for California Kings says 85F to 95F in the day and no lower than 70F at night. So over the course of several more months or a year without that heat level I think he would have been a goner.Comment
