      Re: Ball pythons prices

Ball pythons lay a very small clutch. This seems to be the biggest reason in my opinion.

        Re: Ball pythons prices

I was shocked when I saw the prices in the pet store I use, they have almost doubled in the last 3 months! and these are wild caught, plain balls! first most of them are diseased, full of mites, etc. and will not make it, and if their not buggy, b25.gif they won't eat, and the prices are rediculous! I think they are becoming the latest trend of "Designer Pet". > And I think it stinks! Even if they do live long enought to be bought, people won't take the time to really learn about the snakes needs, and they will suffer, and die slowly, just so someone can have a "cool pet" until they are no longer trendy, then if the snake is lucky, it will end up in bad shape, being rescued! :'(
O.K. this is my ranting of the day.

        ??? perpetually confused,

wow around here red tails are the most expensive, a ball goes for like 39.99 here they consider them the beginner not so fancy can get a dime a dozen snake. dunno why i like balls thats the first snake i ever really played with, besides the albino burmese and red tail my hubby had before i met him.

              Re: Ball pythons prices

Ball python pricing is dropping extremely slow, because they lay small clutches and aren't as proficient as your boas or leopard geckos. Ball python morphs, as you already know, are rather expensive, so few people are producing them. Had they been affordable for more people, the price would drop faster than a group of lemmings off a cliff. That is the exact same thing that happened w/ leopard geckos. It's pretty pointless to make new morphs anymore. Keep in mind that leopards are far more proficient than balls. The blizzard leopard gecko was $1,000 just 5 years ago. Three years later, they go for $40-70, and just about anyone can afford one.

Well, its really bizarre here because they have doubled in price. from an average of about $30-40 to $70+. and those are wild caught yearlings! the last two batches I saw at my pet store, were $69. and they were in really bad shape, ticks, mouth rot, poor things were all scarred up. it was heartbreaking :'( I wanted to take them all home and fix them!
But I am officially grounded from buying more snakes :-[ 'course I'm thinkin' I may be able to get away with it if they are rescues, that's how I got the last 3

                  Re: Ball pythons prices

Pet stores are likely to increase the price no matter what. As long as they can make the sale, they do not care. As we know with most pet stores, they do not have the proper knowledge to care for reptiles.

                      HI,
Be real carful many really cheap BP's on the internet may be wild caught.. Most BP's have to be bromaleted or cooled to breed and this requires time and experience.
Its a bit more difficult to breed BP's, them eggs have to be at the corrrect temp and humidity or they will rot adn prone to fungal attacks , And because of all the problems breeding many breeders are not helping new people understand all the complex steps required to breed and keep the BP"s  ..
They are sweet snakes if you have the patients for all the probelms they can have... And sometimes the will decide its time to go off feeding... Geezee that made me crazy. :P ??? :P.

I'm seeing alot of w/c at pet stores too! And I finally understand what everyone means about them going off feeding. One of my best eaters stopped eating about 1 1/2 months ago, and is still not eating. hopefully soon.

                          Hi,
Well I was wrong about the small clutches with BP's, they had 300 baby ball pythons for sale at a local pet store for 21.oo each...
I bet half of them are dead in a month.. They are such cute and sweet little snakes, I hate to see them being sold in 10 gal tanks.... GEeezeeee...People should be required to take a test to buy one.
                          doug
I had to leave I started looking at one again. I have 5 adult boa's and one baby hog.. me and that rodent pro are becoming to good of friends :.. hehe
IF they ever have a problem with that air express freight rat delivery I am going bank-rupt. my last rat order was 140.00 bucks.. and them Guyana look like they are ready for the rabbits soon./ :P. Hey maybe I could raise rabbits, : naw my wiffes would adopt all of them,, better to buy frozen,, nobody wants a bunny sickle for a pet..

I was reading and ball pythons have about the same size cluch as corn snakes... What is up with that...
and infact they have a better hatch rate with balls... so really it probley evens out... balls are just real expensive for no reason... Oh well I am not that fond of them anyhow... hehe
Sher would lov' a albino though...

I saw exactly what you are talking about Doug! Totally ridiculous.... how about the two neodesha cages full of baby green iguanas.... $9.99 each.
I think that the baby ball pythons that you saw were purchased up at the Richmond, VA show a couple of weeks back, the employees from that store were up there in force with a nice spending budget. The baby bp's were going dirt cheap up there... something like 2 for $24.99 before even trying to negotiate a price with the breeder, so imagine how cheap a bulk purchase was if they waited till the end of the show and bought what was left over. It was really sad watching all the little kids at that show running about carrying the baby bp's like they were rubber toy snakes.
