I was doing some research on flying snakes, as I would like to try keeping some eventually. They're a bit more common in captivity than I thought they were. Anyways, while doing my research, I came across this cool pic.
That is a Paradise tree snake(Chrysopelea paradisi), one of the flying snake species. It's likely the snake won the battle, they are mildly venomous. Not venomous to seriously affect humans, but enough to kill a gecko. Being from the same range, tokays are most likely a part of their natural diet.
Mel, you're only at any risk if you're highly allergic to their venom. Aside from allergies, the worst that can happen would be a swollen finger. They've been officially classified as harmless, regardless of having some venom. Same goes for hognose snakes, they have some venom, but they're officially classified as harmless.
;D 8) Hey Bry i see you like the same snake i do i love them snakes not only are they pretty but they do have a color variation to them... some are more intense green, this one is not as green as the others..
8) yeah i really like these snakes and if ya can get one thats already converted over to eatting mice that would be cool... setting up a cage with tree branches and lots plants would be the way to go with one, i think it would be alot more of a natural setting for this kind of snake... ;D
Actually, bats are part of their natural diet, so, converting them to rodent prey would not be too much of a stretch, I would think. In fact, I did find a Chrysopelea ornata, or Golden Tree snake, that was feeding on f/t mice. Geckos take up a larger part of their natural diet. If you have one that prefers geckos, places like LLLReptile sell feeder house geckos for pretty good price. In other words, their preferred prey species seems to be readily accessible and in consistent supply. If only button quail eggs were as easy to come by, or if egg-eating snakes could take larger eggs, I would be keeping those as well.
I had a chance to get one of those flying snakes a couple of years back.. Would have taken it if it wasn't eating gekos.. To expensive... But they are a cool snake..
Keeping venomes snakes is a little harder than some people think. A few years back I owned three Dimond back rattlesnakes that were givin to me from a friend who had caught a pregnant mother and givin birth. They were great to have, but when I would feed them, and they would sometimes get the bark stuck in there mouths, I would have to pick the buggers up and try and get the bark out. Not a fun thing to do when you see just how big the fangs are. Well a little off topic, that snake is pretty cool looking, poor Tokay cwm8.gif
I have had venomous snakes in that past and it is a whole differnt ball game from owning Boids or Colubirds.. If yopu ever consider getting another Venomous snake, keep it on news paper.. No fun getting tagged by them..
Okay Welsh, I have a friend near me keeps venomous snakes. He keeps and handles them very responsibly with a lot of respect for the animals. I have watched him work with them numerous times, so I have an idea of what goes into working with venomous snakes. I agree with you 100% that it is not as easy as working with your smaller boids and colubrids. I don't proclaim myself to be an expert, nor do I think I know all there is to know about working with hots. Far from it. I just have some idea of what it takes to work with them. Despite the fact that tree snakes have very mild venom (not even close to that of a diamondback rattler's), and that they have been officially classified as harmless. Are you saying that anyone who keeps this species should still treat them as if they were every bit as dangerous as a diamondback? Not being defensive or anything, but that's what I gather from your post.
