  • Adopted a Brazilian rainbow boa

I adopted a 5' or so, 3 year old male Brazilian rainbow boa about a week ago. He's in fairly good shape, though was a bit thin and a little dry. I brought him home, and set him up on some cypress mulch, with a hide and a big water dish. Humidity in his cage is nice and high, and temps in my critter room are fairly stable at 80-82*, so he doesn't have any supplemental heat (I read that they like it a bit cooler so figured supplemental heat wasn't necessary).

After a week in this environment and feeding him two small frozen/thawed rats, he looks much better. He's plumped up a lot and his skin is much smoother and more iridescent. He is, however a very sneaky biter. One can be holding him, and all is well, then suddenly you're bleeding. He doesn't bite down, and the little needle pricks disappear in a couple of days. I'm thinking it was because he was being fed very sparingly at his old home, and he'll mellow out once he's used to me and his new home. He's only done this to me once, and it was before I fed him. Once he is a couple days out from rat #2 I'll take him out again to examine him more closely and see if I end up bleeding again.

He's a very pretty boy and I'm pretty excited to have him. I'll post some pics once he's settled in.

Here's a day 1 pic I took of him right after placing him in his new enclosure. I got him a much larger bowl than what you see in the pic-- that's just what I had on hand when I brought him home .

Good for you, adopting & giving a better home to him. Most snakes that were neglected in terms of feeding probably weren't handled much either, & this "whole new world" is still scary to him...I think he'll settle down in
due time. Be patient with your beautiful new pal... (Good thing he can't read the bowl! ha ha ha!)

Maybe that's why he bit me

I totally see what you mean by too dry. Good job adopting him and improving his life! His poor prior condition probably explains his nerves too -- I am sure with your attention and care he will settle right down for you.

Congratulations on your new addition! I think he will calm down over time too.

I have a few of these guys. Heck, my female produced a litter last year, you want to talk about some little nippers! But yes, they do tame down with gentle and consistent handling.

A tip about handling - mine all love to grab things with their tail. It could be cage furniture, your arm or leg, your fingers or your hair if they're little, the spray bottle, the back of a chair, anything really - and if you don't notice and try to move them, they nip when they feel a tug, especially if they've latched on to something solid.

I just checked on him, as I was considering feeding him again. Looks like he's starting to blue up. He'll have a nice new iridescent coat here in a few days . He was perfectly calm when I picked him up and didn't get defensive, but I put him back almost right away when I noticed he was bluing up, so he didn't have a chance, really. He's very hard and muscular-- much more so than my BCIs and blood python.

Any updates, ophidia? I'm partial to rainbow stories. ;-)

He's shed, looks gorgeous, eyes nice and rounded and not dimpled, and he's eaten three small rats since I got him. I fed him last night so no photos today but I'll try to get one tomorrow (assuming I can find a sunbeam to set him in).

Re: Adopted a Brazilian rainbow boa

I handled him for about a half hour this past evening with no issues. The key appears to be not restraining him at all-- like every other snake, restraint=panic. I suspect the previous owners tried to control him too much when handling, so he got scared/defensive and bit. He was a perfect gentleman for me, gliding from arm to arm and pretending to be a blood pressure cuff a few times. He didn't strike a defensive posture even once and was a delight to handle.

Here's a pic of him. It was taken in warm white LED lighting so no iridescence. After handling him, I'd say he's a good solid 4'. He's solid as a rock, much more muscular than any of my other snakes. My previous Epicrates experience was a Haitian boa (Epicrates striatus) that I bought with my confirmation money way back in the early 90's. He was my first snake that wasn't a garter snake, and I had him for many years. They don't seem to be that common now-- I'd like another, but they never seem to be available.

                        Anyway, here's the pic:

Very well said! Many snakes that are commonly kept as pets (like common boas, corn snakes, & ball pythons) are so tolerant that when newer keepers first try to handle some of the more high-strung species
(like Brazilian rainbow boas, racers, or Korean rat snakes like I currently keep) they may get nipped & wonder why. It's a fine line to keep a light touch & not have your serpent fly out of your hands, but most
of them become more tolerant as time goes by.
