  • Meet Toby

Hey all, I'm new to the forum, and rather than introduce myself, I thought I'd introduce my rubber boa.

We call it Toby, but don't know whether it's a male or female, and I just refer to it as a "he" because of the name. He eats well, and sheds pretty often. I got him from a friend of mine, who had him for quite awhile, then decided he couldn't take care of him, along with all his other snakes. (He's got 5 other snakes IIRC)

I keep him in a 40g Long "reptile" tank, with a locking screen lid. While he's the first snake I've kept, I have kept other a few lizards before, and tarantulas and scorpions as well. My buddy gave me pretty specific care instructions, and they seem to be working out well thus far.

Here he is, curled around my wrist.

      Re: Meet Toby

I rarely ever see these on this website, or in any of my friends collections. I think the smaller boas like the rosy, rubber, and sands are really cool and interesting snakes.

He looks pretty nice! Almost like a colubrid, but with a much cooler head lol

That's pretty cool. I would love to see more pics. We can't own them up here since they are native to Washington but they are hard as heck to find in the wild. I've tried with little success.

Yup, I keep him in a 40g long? Is that not enough room or something?

Anyway I'll post some more pics soon, he just finished eating, so he's going to be hiding under his rock for a few days, once he's out and about, I'll get him to pose for some more pics.

              Glad you like him.

A 40g is a bit big for that little guy. If you have them in too big of an enclosure, sometimes they can get stressed out. Just make sure you have plenty of hiding spots for him throughout the tank. Either way he looks good and good luck.

Awesome - I own one too . We love him . Ours can probably wrap around my wrist twice , and we keep him in a plastic tub approx 5 - 8 gallon size -- which is plenty for these guys . But if you've got the space , and he doesn't stress, then do it.

                      VERY cool!

I don't know that I buy into the "too big" theory regarding enclosures. IMO, if you're able to provide the correct husbandry parameters (heat, humidity, light if necessary, and security), than an oversized enclosure is no problem. If it were, zoo's would have a MAJOR issue And besides, mother nature is the biggest enclosure there is!

                      Congrats on the rubber boa!

Looks nice man you still have him? I cought one in around 1989 up in Spokane WA. I let him go after I could not get him to eat for several months.
