  • Guess who's on her back?

Noooo, it's not what you think... :P

I posted almost 2 weeks ago that my little G. pulchra had barricaded herself from the rest of the world in her hide box. Well, every night or two, I get the temptation to look inside just to see how she's doing. The little gap that has been webbed over allows enough light to see in. Well, tonight I looked in, and got a surprise I wasn't expecting. She's laying there on her back. I know spiders have been doing this for millions of years, but I'm a little nervous and excited too. Can't wait to see how she turns out from this molt.

Well, after a long week of watching and waiting, Herman has finally decided to come back out into the world. After not being fed for a little more than 3 weeks, I was pretty sure she was hungry. So, I dropped a couple crickets in, and she immediately plowed over them. She looks just a teeny bit larger, but not much. I realize that Grammastolas are typically slow growers, but was hoping she'd come out a bit bigger.

I don't know the difference between male and female growth rates at this age, but is the difference more obvious in males of this species after molts? She also isn't spending time in her hide at all, would it be safe to dig it out a bit, and take out the exuvium to maybe get a guess as to what her sex is?
