  • Wolf Spider with spiderlings on her abdomen

Before I go to bed at night I take my dog out and while I'm out there, I walk to the mailbox to check the mail. But, to ensure I don't step on any critters, I turn the flashlight on my phone on. Tonight, I noticed a spider from about 10 feet away. I pretty much instantly knew it was a wolf spider. As I got closer, I noticed that it's abdomen looked odd... textured... almost like a golf ball (about 4 feet away). I inched closer, expecting it to take off and it just stayed still. A closer look revealed... SPIDERLINGS! LOTS OF THEM!

So, I called my dog, ran inside, grabbed my camera/lens/flash/flash triggers/umbrella/stand and headed back outside with my fingers (mentally) crossed. The spider was still there. I had a pretty hard time focusing in the dark and ended up propping my phone up and shining the flashlight on it. Focus and sharpness are kind of bleh but hey... for 11pm shots of a spider covered in spiderlings, it's not terrible.

Hopefully the RTB forum software doesn't destroy the quality of the images...

just checked... the forum software resized the images and softened them.. BIG TIME. That's what everyone likes, right? Soft images? It's my favorite! /sarcasm

I'd punch the forum software in the face if I could.

I thought they were pretty good, can you host them online somewhere and then post the links as well? I'm technologically challenged so I don't know.

Thanks for posting those, I love wolf spiders! I'm sure your neighbors reported you to the men in the little white coats though. LOL
