  • Keeping Lizards on Sand (***Graphic***)

I don't keep leos, but I thought that this might be something that someone could use to help convince others to be more careful about husbandry with their lizards. It's kind of saddening that so many people just double-down on this and are too stubborn to take advice...

Anyway, these photographs came from this FaceBook post:

I have had a Leo for 11 years and she has NEVER been on sand for that exact reason! Which is why I also quit working at the pet store years ago. I couldn't tell customers to buy the things the pet industry convinces new hobbyists to buy just to make another buck at the expense of the animals.

I have heard a lot of people lately saying that slate tile is pretty good (since it emulates their rocky natural habitat), but I don't really know for sure.

I had some leos when I was a child. We kept them in a cage that had 1/2 carpet (we had 5 pieces that were washed and cleaned in rotation to keep them fresh) and 1/2 was slate. Gave them a nice cozy place and a nice solid place to hangout. We never has a problem with that

I think maybe its like boas? Everyone has their opinion. Breeders keep on paper towels for ease of cleaning, slate tile if you are wanting to build a good looking tank. I keep my girl on cyprus bedding and so far have no had any issues.

I keep my bearded dragon on slate tile because it retains heat extremely well for overnight when all the lights are off and its rough texture helps keep their nails filed down a bit. Haven't tried it on my leo.

Carpet is nice but if there is an emergency and you are not able to clean it immediately it can harvest bacteria really badly.
