I am now a new owner of a baby Sav. monitor. Lee gave me one of his, the one that had a tail problem. I have a question, Do Monitors, like snakes need time to adjust before feeding? The reason I ask is because on Monday night I placed in the cage about a doz small crix. I didn't give him any last nite because there were still about 4-5 crix in the cage. Well that's what I could see anyhow. So I didn't buy him any more. Then this morning I looked in on him to make sure he was OK and still about 4-5+ crix in the cage. I'm not sure if she's eating or not. Now I know she's in shed, a very bad shed at that. So many pieces are loose on him. Could that be why he's not eating. Also besides the tail problem, which does appear that he was nipped by another monitor because the tip is completely missing other than the bone itself and the bit above the bone is kind brownish. Also upon closer inspection the upper part above the eye crown is kind of bluish/purple, it's the same color if he closes the one eye. It kind of looks like he has a black eye. Could it be a black eye or could he have a bacterial something, or could it be from shedding, or could it be a black eye? I'm kind of worried. This is my first monitor, so I don't know what to expect. I'll post some pix of the tail and they eye thing as soon as I get my mother's camera, if you think that'll help.

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Hey some lizards take a little time to get adjusted. Ohh and never keep the crickets in the cage. Put some in, if she dont eat them in a matter of a half hour to an hour, take them out and try again a few hours later. And for that bad shed, go to the store and buy herpcare shed aid, it works WONDERES on lizards. Just spray it on and leave it be. Cant help ya with the other problems, should see a vet.

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Hey Evil,
Congrats on the new Sav.. They take some time to fully adjust, but offering the food is the right thing.. Just try not to leave the crix in with him over night Like Welsh suggested. The tail will get chewed on.. Maybe Jayson will add some light on the black eye thing.. never had a sav long term, and never seen that.. Sorry I could be of more help..

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Hey Evil Sorry so Late on the reply. Lets start with the black eye thing. Is this on both eyes or just one? Some Savhannahs colloration around the eye is a blackish blue to a deep purple..This is common one of my Savh's have this type of coloring. As for the bad shed I wouldn't worry about it. Savh's don't need humidity like Boas do they live in a low to moderate humidty enviroment. I will up the humidity for about a month once a year just to simulate the rainy season. When Savh's shed they shed in pieces and it looks horrible but thats totally normal for them. Some baby savh's can be skiddish and need time to acclimate.. If he doesn't want crix..try meal worms, super worms, wax worms,or even earthworms. Most Savh's don't turn food down so if he doesn't start eating in the next few days you know you have a problem. Question about the tail. Did Lee take him to the Vet? If not he needs to go to get that piece of bone sticking out of the end of his tail snipped off. Not to say thats what thell do but more then likely thats usually the treatment. He most definetly needs to go to the vet before the tail gets infected. Wich will cause a ton of other problems and bills for you. Popst a pic I would like to see the eye and the tail if possible..Thanks and I hope this helped.

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Actually, yeah that "black eye" is on both eyes, but above only one. Yeah Cuda and I thought about infection, so I've been cleaning it once a day with hydrogen peroxide and neosporin (not the painkiller kind). Figured that'll help, until I get the chance to get her to the vet. As far as her eating. I'll take the crix out. I just figured I'd leave them in thinking that when he's hungry, he'll eat. But I'll be sure to remove them. I've tried superworms, but he wants nothing to do with them. According to Lee, he won't take a pinky, but I'll try this weekend again. I did get him to eat something last nite. Tracey and I came up with it, just for something that he might eat. Canned Cat food and raw egg yolk. He snatched it right up. It was kind of funny, his first bite apparently was a bit too big, because she was chewing it like she was eating peanut butter. It was stuck to the roof of his mouth. He was all snapping his mouth and licking his lips, it was all stuck together!! It was quite a funny site. :P I guess only time will tell. But yeah, a vet visit is in the near future.

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Whatever u think i did not mistreat the little guy i didn't even notice the problems when in my care except for the tail i think the guy who had him before me did all that to him. no he has not been to the vet yet Jason just started thinkin of the upkeep on two adult ones in the future and didn't want to be broke and not be able to afford food for the snakes and the savs and the leopard gex lol that is why i cut down to one and he was given to evil for that very same reason he knew that he would have to take it to the vet i told him well before he took him ... lol just so u know i don't beat my animals i am alright lol

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Don't worry Lee, I know you didn't mistreat him!!!! I don't know the other guy well enough to make a judgement on him, but I know you care for you pets. I was talking to Cuda last nite and with what Mitch said, I may be worrying a bit to early.

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Yeah that catfood trick works like a charm.. I use it with every rescue lizzy that isn't eating. I just mix some calcium/vita 3 powder in with it. The fav to date is the shredded turkey in gravey. The skinks went nuts over it.... Try mixing in a few wax or meal worms in it..
Good luck with that little guy..

Re:New to the monitor owner's family
Guys Just a Warning.. I love the catfood trick to but, Dont use it all the time. Cat food is very high in fat. I usually only give it to my savhs as a treat every once in awile. Ohh and Evil try raw hamburger meat with a little calci powder and a raw egg..mix it all up and he'll chow down on that..The lean hamburger will be less fatty then the cat food.. ;D
