  • Sav monitor not eating

Almost a week now and I don't know if he's eating at all. I tried a couple more crix, and he showed no interest. I'm tried the cat food/egg yolk mix that I talked about in the last post, he showed no interest. I stuck his nose in it, he licked if off his lips but that's about it. I placed wax worm in there in a small dish(actually the like to a Hardee's glass), still all there that night and the next morning. I've been giving him some liquid vitamins, by dropping a couple drops on his lips, he'll lick that right off. I really don't want to force feed him, I'm worried about breaking his jaw by forcing it open. But I don't know what to do. All he wants to do it hide, either in his hide box or behind the water dish. When I get him out, he's real active, well, atively trying to get away. But I'm at a loss here. Any suggestions.

Don't worry Lee, I don't blame you for it.

    Re:Savh monitor not eating

:'( Evil I hate to hear these types of things but, he needs to go to the vet. It is uncommon for a savh not to eat.. Like I said in a prior post if your Savh isnt eating something is really wrong.. If he hasn't been taken to the vet for his tail yet I would get him in It could be getting infected or really painful wich is causing him not to eat...Good Luck..

This has me puzzled he never turned down a meal for me at all he always took the crix i would just powder the crix down with calcium powder and throw the dozen in and let them go at them no problems at all. I know i am getting no blame but it still makes me feel bad... like i said earlier if he wouldn't or wasn't eating i would not have got rid of him to anybody. the day i gave him to evil he just took a half dozen large crix so i don't know man maybe he won't eat cuz he is used to being with another sav sounds wierd but maybe that is it i don't know or maybe he still isn't used to his new home and environment. that is all i can think of at this point.

Yeah, I'm hoping that my girlfriends check comes tomarrow, if so, I'm calling the vet and taking him in on Tuesday. I'm going to try some crix tonite and see what happens.

i know this may be nasty, but try to squish the crix a little bit, once they smell that they go nuts, atleast mine does, just put them in a dish and give em a good smush, if he doesnt eat them then bring him to the vet, well thats all i can offer cause none of my savs has ever not eaten :-\ ???

Thats exactly what I said thats one way to know your Savh is sick is if it doesn't eat..Savhs are vivacious eaters and they usually over eat..Thats why I think this is rather odd....I feel bad that I can't give you a good answer but, this isn't a problem I've ever had... :-[

OK, I'm going to try some crix tonite. I'll get some small and some large. I'll squish a couple of them and see what happens. I just don't know. I'm really hoping that he's eating when I'm not home or paying any attention to him. I guess I'll see.

                    Re:Sav monitor not eating

                    Hey Evil,

Sorry to hear about the sav not eating.. Lets look at this as a general problem with a reptile not specific to sav's..

First is he drinking any water? yawning at all? any dried whitish or wet whitish stuff around his mouth? I will assume temps are right..

I have dealt with a few savs in the rescue. Both were not eating, well one wasn't at all and one was nibbling just a little.. The one that wasn't eating at all. I put him is a luke warm bath in a feed tank for about an hour. Put him back in his cage and offered food, and he slammed them.. My guess was he was slightly dehydrated from refusing food and water because he was constipated.. So that worth a try.. The second Sav. I tried the bath, he did get real active, but still no eating.. I tried every food item I could think of. No luck.. As a shot in the dark I opened his mouth (watch those teeth, real sharp) and seen his whole mouth was inflamed. I treated him for mouthrot, and was tube feeding him for 10 days, and after that he was eating, put on weight and was adopted out.. Just worth a shot.. Try not to look at the Sav as a Sav, but like one of your snakes.. What would you look for, what would you try, etc.. If you do have to tube feed, give me a call I will give you some tricks that help..

Good luck and let us know what is happening.. BTW the above is not a suggestion not to get him to a vet, just some things to try before you go..

                              Re:Sav monitor not eating

Yep, it was pretty exciting. I came home last nite and looked in and most of the cat food was gone and all the wax worms were gone. I was so excited!! Now lets see if he keeps it up. As far as drinking. Yes, I've seen he several times in his water dish, swimming around and such. So, I don't think I have to worry about dehydration. I'm going to try a new born pinky tomarrow and see what happens. I'll also try to make a Vet appointment soon as well. I'm just happy that he ate something. I guess he just had to get adjusted to his new enclosure. Thanks for all your help and Ideas.
