  • Feeding a Broad-headed Skink

    Hello all,
I'm hoping there's someone out there who can tell me how often I should be feeding an adult female Broad-headed skink. I'm a snake guy and this is my first lizard. I've been searching on the net, but everything just tells me what to feed her, not how much or how often. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Re:Feeding a Broad-headed Skink

    Hey Phil,

I looked through some of my old Reptiles magazines to see if I could find anything on skinks at all. In the December 2002 issue I did find an article on Sandfish Skinks. Not owning any skinks myself I am sure that how often you feed Sandfish Skinks will relate to how often you feed Broad-Headed Skinks.

Here is all the article had to say about how often. "A handful of crickets released every few days into the sandfish enclosure should be adequate sustenance for your pet, but more or fewer may be required depending on the animal's needs and appetite." Hmmm. Every few days. LOL

Most articles I've read on feeding any adult lizard states that every 3 to 4 to even 5 days is sufficient. I feed my adult leopard geckos every 3 to 4 days. The article did go on to say however that mealworms and wax worms are accepted by skinks. But you already know what to feed them.

    Hope this helps...

      Thanks

      Jeff,
Yes, that does help. I don't know why I didn't think of looking through my Reptiles magazines. I have the issue you mentioned and will go back and read that article.

      THANKS MUCH!

        No problem Phil.

I hope to see you around the forum. We have chat sessions every now and then about different kinds of reptiles. Check out the calendar, which can be accessed at the top of each page, for chat subjects and times.

Also, feel free to post more statements, questions, and pics.

          Nice change of pace

          Jeff,
Thanks for making me feel welcomed. Nice change compared to some of the other forums where some people have a real sense of superiority and seem to take pleasure in talking down to and insulting people.
          THANKS AGAIN!!!

            8) Hey Phil, welcome aboard and hope you enjoy it here.. i would sugest that you feed atleast every 2 days or so. And make sure you use a varied diet, skinks like to hunt there prey, try diffrent things such as crickets, king meal works in the soft stage-right after molting, moths from out side, tiny leaf worms- the kind ya get from the bait store, alittle tiny amount of canned cat food, wax worms and everything coated once a week with a vitamin calcium powder.. They should be big enough to take a tiny newborn-day old pinkie mouse once a month.. So just being curious how are you housing yours??

              Housing

              Barracuda,
She's in a 20-gallon long with cypress mulch as a substrate which she loves to bury herself in. Water bowl (that she spends a fair amount of time in), hide-box, and large branch for climbing. Pretty warm in Florida right now so no heating is needed.
Thanks for all the info by the way

                8) Sounds like its doing great Phil, try a super low watt UVB bulb at one end of the cage as they do like to bask every now and then. Have ya put any plants in there fake or live??
