Not so WILD that a real expert would be worried..
          .
.. more seriously, yes those tortoises were photographed 'in the wild' near my home in Brownsville, Texas. Gopherus berlandieri or Texas tortoise. A widespread and prolific species of tortoise that uses a variety of open and brush habitats over about the southern third of the state (and much of adjacent Mexico).

These won't be alive soon.. the area has survey flags all over it and heavy machinery working nearby..

that's sad that they won't survive. can't you create an outside pen and take them under your care? at least until the work is done.

A sad thing to see indeed, Heavy machinery leading to more development and loss of habitat.
I live in an area up North west of Chicago. Still very open less developed area especially on my street. Although that changed about 5 years ago. I had a large field basically a self sustaining small ecosystem was over there. Many rabbit, skunk, raccoon , ground hogs , Owls, hawks Deer on occasion. Plus one very beautiful very rare white fox. All lost to development and new houses. The fox ended up running around in my neighbors fenced in back yard one morning when the machinery started. Caught inside the fenced in yard, not knowing how to make egress. He ran around in circles for over an hour jumping on the deck skipping along the edge of the pool .he was frantic. He finally found his way out not to be seen again. Sad
Many a meeting at city hall I attended. With research in hand . Research packets passed out to all the trustees. To no avail my pleads to preserve this beautiful area fell on deaf ears !

Oh No! Texas tortoises are 'completely protected'.. pick one up and get a $1000.00 per day fine.. and maybe a criminal conviction!.. Plow under several hundreds and destroy the habitat.. that's OK!
