8)Ok most of you know i have takin in a baby blue jay that my cat tried to have for lunch, well when i took it in it had alittle growing to do.. Now that it has a long enough tail and all its wing feathers and is able to fly plus the fact that its trying to eat things on its own i have desided to turn him/her loose.. So day one it flys up to a tree and sits there all day.. NP i go out later that evening to see if its gone, Nope still there and other types of birds beatting it up so i call its name Chip and it comes back down with its mouth open saying FEED ME LADY.. lol!! ok next day we do it again well things was ok till the robins desided they was gona kick its butt, back to me and got fed somemore... Finally late yesterday it got up into the tree and was there all night wow could this be it on its own finally... Heck no JR went out the back door this morn and sure enough Chip fallow him around saying feed me bud right now... hahahahahaha!!! Well only prob is he dont know how to fly downwards only up and straight across, so i finally went out and called Chip and he flew to a branch on a tree next to the porch, mom fed him/her and is now back in its cage resting.. poor thing was just starving... So im sitting here on the comp looking out the window and sure enough a stupid goose hawk flys down sits on his cage and trys to get to Chip.. now i gota watch what happens to Chip.. Goose hawks are mean as sin and will eat anything they can get if Chip would have been in the tree branch he would have been lunch... :'( :'( These goose hawks use to swoop down and pluck and kill our chickens right in front of us you could even run up to them and smack them with a broom they dont care about people at all... So now i gota watch Chip if i turn him loose again later... I already know what im gona do if the hawk comes back.... hehehehe!!! All for this crazy blue jay baby...

Re:Crazy Blue Jay Baby...
Honestly Cuda, from what you are describing, it sounds like you've got yourself an imprinted Blue Jay. It's actually a pretty easy thing to happen. Chip has imprinted you as his/her seragate parents and may not leave. That's what happend with Marmalde, our Starling. Honestly, I would reccomend bringing him in. May I ask what you are feeding it? I would not reccomend earthworms, they harbor some pretty bad parsites. Gapeworm being one of them, that can really harm a baby bird.

Re:Crazy Blue Jay Baby...
Have to agree with Evil here. Imprinting is one of the hardest thing to avoid with wild animals. I know I had to go to a 4 hour class about imprinting alone when I went for the wildlife rehab lic.. If that BJ keep coming back when you call him, it will never survive in the wild.. The few small birds I have helped rehab, we always just got the bird slurry for them at the local pet shop.. Same stuff they feed baby parrots till they can feed by themselfs. One thing I found interesting about imprinting is one way to avoid it is to drape a sheet ove yourself like Casper when you feed. Also keep the bird out of your house so it doesn't get used to your scent....
Gonna have to start calling you the bird lady..LOL..

Re:Crazy Blue Jay Baby...
:-\Yeah i know he/she is more than likely imprinted already.. I have been keeping its cage outside in the trees so its more natural, its old enough to eat on its own even though it dont want to.. So tomarrow we are gona set it up in the screen tent with a huge branch and stuff and atleast in there it can fly around using its wings and learning more skills... plus the goose hawk wont be able to get at it.. As for food , lets see its getting just about everything i can make and find, mostly berries and ground up sloppy seed mixed with vitamins, catapilers, bugs of all kinds and yes earth worms to boot, its also getting veggies, fruits, bread, tender vittles cat food, also some mealies and crix, nuts that are grounded up in the blender, rasins, sloppy oatmeal peanutbutter mix with cereal, black oil sunflower seed as that is there fav in the wild and wow the list goes on... whatever im doing is good it has great weight to it and its poo is very normal.. Its feathers are very clean and shinny and eyes are very bright and clear.. Trust me raising this bird i know what im doing have raised so many baby birds for soooooo many yrs since i was a kid... Il keep him outside for as long as need be and then come winter if hes still with us he will come in the house, his cage is way plenty big, its one of those huge Prevue iggy cages...

Re:Crazy Blue Jay Baby...
8) well Chip came back, he was sogged soaked from the rain and was pretty hungry as well.. JR went to get in the truck and he came down to the porch, who knows where he came from but he sat on the proch got his goodies and then sat in a tree branch in the sun with wings open and sunning him self i bet hes was cold... He looked like a drenched rat... poor bird.. after a hr he took off again.. so maybe he will still learn to be on his own seems like hes staying away now longer and longer which is good.. At least he made it thru the winds and nasty storm we had.. I also noticed hes putting food between his toes and pecking it till hes ready to eat it which is a very good thing and drinking drops of water off leafs in the trees.. crossing my fingers that some day he wont come back and that he makes it thru the winter.. Theres lots blue jays around here so maybe hel get the idea and fallow them... Blue jays are more of a solitary bird so who knows... :-\
