  • What about keeping snakes and rabbits in the same room?

I figured this would be the most appropriate place to post this because chances are, most people on this forum keep snakes!

Anway, I've kept rabbits in the past and they are once beginning to grow on me again. Currently I have two snakes that I keep in my room, housed in sturdy and safe enclosures. I would probably need to keep the rabbit inside my room as well if I bought one. Then I began to wonder if the behaviour of the snakes would change if a rabbit were to be living in the same room. With the way my room is, the rabbit cage could be about 8 feet away from both of the snake enclosures, but rabbits definitely seem to have a strong scent and my snakes seem to smell food a mile away when it's feeding day.

I have no concerns about either snake escaping, but I certainly don't want to have to deal with snakes that are in often/constant feeding mode and to have to deal with 2 angry big snakes.

SO, have any of you guys on here dealt with a situation like this? Did you notice your snake's behaviour changing or did they even notice? Looking forward to responses and advice!

I wouldn't. My snakes get pretty excited as soon as I start thawing rats in the laundry room.

I wouldn`t do that, yes snakes get too excited about seeing food LOL. Also snakes are great escape artist and there will definitely be a chance that your snake or snakes may get free and your rabbits become breakfast, lunch and dinner. Too much excitement for them so keep food in a different room..

I wouldn't do that either...& consider that if your snakes are restless because they smell food nearby, they may damage themselves trying to get out of their cages. Secure cages may contain them ok, but you don't want
your snakes injuring their faces from trying to push their way out. Also, whenever you try to interact with the snakes, they may well be thinking "FOOD" instead of "hello?" and that could get you more accidental bites.

Besides, How would you like having to be in the same room with a delicious, perfectly cooked porterhouse and have no way to reach it?

I agree, probably a bad idea. My snakes get excited when food is thawing on a different floor of the house.

And let's not forget the bunnies in the equation--the stress of being housed in the same room with large predators would definitely not do them any good...

A long time ago my sister was housing my burm temporarily at her house. In her infinite wisdom she decided to acquire a pet bunny during that brief period of time... Yeah I got tagged, real bad. You will too. Your snakes will the rabbits if they are in the same house.

I get bit from my Boas by simply petting a dog or cat. I don't let them In the snake room , or any type of furry animal . BAD Idea. I bring a
bucket of f/t bunnies Into the snake room, and within minutes, every snake smells them and acts completely different than normal
